Chapter 14: We’re Going to Springwater

“What did I tell you about making jokes, Nick?”

“I’m not joking.”

“You should have said you were. You could have pretended you didn’t seriously propose something that ridiculous.”

He stands. “Look, I understand you’re afraid of the place, but, as frightening as it is, I think it’s less likely to hurt us than the gunman who is right here in St. Louis.”

Okay, that’s not a terrible point. I might not be safe anywhere I go. Still, that doesn’t justify me going to the most dangerous place on earth. “Maybe if he strikes again here, the police will catch him.”

“As I’ve already said, if this is Springwater business, the police will be of no help. If our killer is from Springwater, he probably is a shifter. The police don’t know to use silver bullets. He’d either escape from them or turn into a wolf and maul them to death.”

That’s not a terrible point, either. In fact, it’s quite a fine one. If the killer is a werewolf, Sergeant Barnes and his men would be utterly outmatched.
