Vigilante: First Mission

As Riley was walking home, he pulled up his quest log and opened the only Main Quest available, "Neighborhood Cleanup".

"Main Quest - Neighborhood Cleanup: The first step in your journey as a Vigilante. Infiltrate the warehouse from 2 - 5am and find out what's being stored there. Incapacitate all enemies."

"Quest reward: 300 exp, <Incognito> Level 2."

"Bonus objective: Complete the mission without anyone raising the alarm."

"Bonus reward: 1 Class Point."

'Seems simple enough.'

Riley stepped into his home. The police had long since cleared out, but the place was still a mess. He took one look before deciding to leave it for tomorrow. For now, he had much more important things to do.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As he stepped out of his house, Riley took a breath of fresh air. He was feeling refreshed, having taken a nap and shower. It was a little after midnight, and the lack of moonlight made it perfect for less-than-legal activities.
"Right. Time to get to work."
Riley wondered how he would complete the bonus objective. After reading the description of his Vigilante Equipment, Riley knew that getting a 'Class Point' from the bonus reward would greatly benefit him. Especially since the second level of his mask unlocked [Night Vision], which would definitely be of great use, considering that most of his missions were likely to take place at night.
He decided to take a short detour to a local 24/7 supermarket before heading to the location on his minimap. He knew that to successfully incapacitate all enemies, he would need rope and something to gag their mouths with.
Riley strolled around the aisles, looking for the materials that he needed. After reaching the DIY section, Riley realized that he had no idea how many enemies he would be facing. As such, he decided to take a fairly excessive amount of rope.
'Better safe than sorry', Riley thought to himself.
He then continued looking around, until he came across some electrical tape.
'Well, I don't know what's best for gagging people, but if movies are anything to go by, then tape is probably sufficient.'
He dropped the tape into his shopping basket and made his way to the checkout counter.
As the cashier was scanning his items, she had an anxious look on her face.
"Uhm, if you don't mind me asking, what will you be using these for?"
The question shocked Riley. Panicking, he replied, "Well, uh, for my camping trip next week!"
"A-ah, I see."
After ringing his items up and bagging them, Riley paid for and walked away with his items.
As he was walking out, he noticed the cashier had walked over to her colleagues and was now whispering to them. Each of them had terrified looks on their faces as they watched Riley leave the store. It finally sunk in. A man, wearing a long-sleeved, black turtleneck, with black pants, and a hoodie, buying rope and tape at 1 A.M.. Riley realised that he looked like a potential kidnapper.
Before he could raise any more red flags, Riley activated <Incognito> and started jogging toward the location on his minimap.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As the marker on his minimap neared, he slowed down to a walk. He wanted to scout the building out before he went in.

It was a small warehouse. The lot was roughly 800 square meters, with the warehouse occupying roughly 80% of it. The walls were about double his height, with barbed wire on top, which made scaling them impossible.

The main entrance was a chain link fence double gate. There were no guards anywhere that he could see, but he had minimal vision of the area within the compound. Circling around, the main gate was the only entrance he could see.

'Hope no one's watching the front door.'

He inched closer to the gate and peeked in. The lot seemed empty.

'Either I have the wrong building, or they aren't expecting anyone. The door isn't even padlocked.'

He slid the gate latch open and softly pushed. The gate swung open slowly, making minimal noise. Riley padded in, taking care to close the gate as he entered. Ahead of him stood the warehouse.

'I thought it'd be a lot harder. Oh well, can't complain. Now for the hard part'

Riley made his way toward the front door. Upon reaching, he pressed his ear up against it.

He could hear the faint sounds of snoring. Counting the number of different snores, Riley guessed that there would be at least three people near the door. Taking a deep breath, he tried the doorknob.

'Here goes nothing.'

Riley opened the door slightly, then poked his head in. There were a few people sitting on chairs scattered around within ten meters of the door; three men and a woman. He stepped in and closed the door behind him. After his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he surveyed the area. There were tables with cases on them as far as the eye could see.

He walked up to one and slowly lifted it open, revealing a very familiar gun. It was an AK-47 assault rifle, complete with two loaded magazines. Riley's eyes widened.

'No. Way.'

He closed it and opened the next. This one contained two Glock pistols, with four magazines.

'All of these cases contain guns? There must be close to a hundred of them in this warehouse!'

He shut the case.

'I need to report this to the police. But first I gotta take out those guys who were supposed to be guarding this stuff.'

Just as he was taking his bat out from Inventory, he remembered <Quick Draw>.

'Now that I think about it, I don't actually know what <Quick Draw> does', Riley thought to himself, as he pulled up the skill's description.

"Allows you to materialize and equip a weapon from inventory instantly. Grants a 10% damage and attack speed boost for 2 seconds. Does not apply to unequipping. Cooldown 30 seconds."

"That's pretty cool! I gotta test that out later."

He approached the closest sleeping gangster, bat in hand. Just as Riley was about to strike him, he hesitated.

'This feels… wrong. Hitting a sleeping person on the head with a bat seems really messed up. Besides, it might make too much noise and wake up the other three.'

He put his bat back into Inventory.

'I've never tried this before, but here goes!'

He gripped one hand around the gangster's mouth and wrapped the other arm around his neck. Naturally, the gangster woke up. As soon he realized what was happening, he started struggling. Flailing his arms about, he knocked over a case before passing out. The case hit the floor with a loud Smack.

'Ah, shit.'

Just as the other three were waking up, he materialized his bat with <Quick Draw> and charged. With one powerful swing, he knocked out the closest one.

'Two down, two to go'

[Sense Danger] kicked in. Turning around, he saw one of the gangsters pulling out a gun. Activating <Extreme Agility>, he threw his bat at the thug and charged towards him.

The gun-thug instinctively brought up both arms to block. The bat missed, but that was enough for Riley. He had banked on the bat being a distraction, and it worked. Before the thug could take a shot, Riley tackled him to the floor, one hand grabbing onto the gun with an iron grip. Utilizing his increased speed, he laid a flurry of punches into the thug until his body went limp. Satisfied, Riley gripped the gun in his hand and turned around to face the last gangster.

It was the female thug. She had a knife gripped in each hand — wicked looking karambits.

"Alright, who the FUCK are you. Start talking now before I carve you up."

Riley raised an eyebrow and pointed the gun at her.

"I'd like to see you try. I'll light you up like swiss cheese if you take one step closer to me. Now drop those knives and get your hands up."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Fine."

Opening her hands, she dropped both knives onto the floor.

"Now. Why do you have so many guns? Who the hell are you guys?"

She frowned.

"What? I should be the one asking you that question. Do you have any idea who you're fucking with here?"

"Nope. Care to enlighten me?"

The thug burst into laughter.

"So if you aren't specifically targeting our group, then why are you even here? You're clearly not just some guy."

"You wouldn't understand even if I told you. Now, I'm gonna need you to do me a favor."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"There. Satisfied?"
Riley tested the rope.
"Yep. Now it's your turn. Would you be so kind as to sit down on that chair?" Riley gestured to the last chair that remained unoccupied.
"Su-"
Her eyes looked past Riley and widened.
"What? What is it?"
Riley turned his neck to get a glimpse of what she was looking at.
"There's nothing the-"
[Sense Danger] buzzed.
'Oh SHIT! I can't believe I fell for that!'
He quickly turned back to face her, just in time for the handle of one of her karambits to strike him in the forehead. The thug had expertly kicked the knife at him, then proceeded to pick up the other knife with her left hand and was now charging at him.
Angered by his throbbing forehead, he took aim and fired a shot. Immediately, his arm jerked backward, and there was a throbbing pain in his wrist. But what struck him most was the amplitude of the gunshot. It was like a firecracker had exploded right next to his face. To make things worse, his shot had missed.
"Fuck this."
He dropped the gun. Activating <Extreme Agility>, he caught her left arm with his right hand. Her eyes widened with shock.
"How the hell are you so fast?"
Riley smirked. "Trade secret."
Curling his fingers halfway against his lower knuckles, he brought his left hand up, striking her chin with the heel of his palm. Her body instantly went limp.
'That settles that. Time to tie her up, then I can get out of here.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Battle ended. Gained 170 experience."

"Quest complete. Gained 300 experience! <Incognito> increased to level 2!"

"Bonus objective failed."

Riley glanced at the window. 'Forget the bonus objective, I'm just lucky to be alive. That was a really tough battle. I guess I can't always rely on [Dodge Step] to save my hide.'

His exp bar popped up. The bar filled out twice, before coming to a stop at 58/244.

'I really gotta start thinking about using my stat points.'

Riley closed the notification windows and opened his Inventory. Aside from his bat, it now contained the gun and one of the karambits that he had decided to keep as trophies, and the rest of the rope that he hadn't used.

'Now to call the police.'

Using one of the gangsters' phones just to be safe, he dialed the emergency number. After informing the police dispatcher that he had heard gunshots, he hurriedly left the area before the cops could arrive, and made his way back to the hospital.
