The hall fell silent, and Spheris could sense the surprise in all their shadows, which really confused him.

Did they all really believe that a Bearer having a higher Rank meant they were stronger? They all seemed to have been brainwashed to believe this so as to maintain the hierarchy of power in this Academy.

He could hear their whispers, 'Did he just do that to an ATN?' and it became even clearer to him that these Students subjected their strengths to the confines of their Power Rank.

It... shouldn't be that way.

The sound of Davion's breathing was heavy and loud as he lay on the ground, stunned by the sudden reversal. Spheris stood over him, his expression calm, unflinching.

"I didn't go for my tenth strike," he muttered. "You made me hit you."
