Chapter Eleven: Middle Ground

Kinsley’s POV

“Please,” I plead, stepping past my mate and eyeing the stoic Alpha in the woods. “Just tell me the truth. Why did you make this deal? Why did you send me away?”

Alpha Jonathan breaks into a sinister laugh. “You want to distract me from killing your mate for questions like that? Come on, Kinsley, stop playing dumb!”

I started to take a step back, to cower behind my mate, but the rising courage in my throat was still hot and begging for answers. I need them. I wouldn’t even know my name if not for his slip of the tongue a week prior.

“He beat me,” I breathed, Terron’s hand casually stroking my hair and soothing me with just a touch on my spine. “Ace Whitfield beat me for years, Alpha Jonathan. Was I that terrible of a daughter?”

For the first time since seeing him in this illusion of truth, I see a hint of sanity in his eyes. He stands straighter, adjusting his salt and peppered hair behind his large, fleshy padded ears.
