CHAPTER EIGHT

Right from that moment Kambili allowed the new girl Sarah into his life, she's been trying so hard to push their relationship to another level.

She was behaving already as if she had an eye on him when he was still with his first wife.

Therelationship was barely two months old when she moved in with Kambili.

Kambili who had been praying not to have an elaborate wedding the second time, was happy that Sarah had made it easier for him by moving in with him.

He only went to her family and paid the bride price and did other necessary procedures as the customs and traditions demand.

They lived together as husband and wife.

In no time she got pregnant. Kambili registered her for antenatal in the best hospital around their versinity. He warned her never to miss her antenatal classes for any reason.

He was just trying to be more cautious about the safety of his new wife and his unborn child this time.

She did as he said.

As her expected date of delivery was drawing closer, Kambili was always asking her how she felt. He took good care of her. He provided all she needed and was always available for her.

Sarah was visiting the hospital regularly.

When she started having stronger signs of labour, Kambili Immediately drove her to the hospital.

The midwife on duty checked her body and moved her immediately to the labour room.

"Thank goodness you people came early enough, in no time, you will carry your baby," the midwife assured them.

"Ok thank you ma'am," Kambili said.

Sarah climbed the delivery table and the midwives advised and guided her on what to do.

Kambili was in the waiting room praying and hoping to hear good news.

He had waited for more than an hour and none of the midwives had come out to say a word to him as he expected.

He was so worried.

He nervously walked around the waiting room.

One of the midwives opened the door, Kambili rushed to go and meet her but she quickly walked past him and left without saying a word.

Kambili was so confused.

He was still there thinking of what next to do when the nurse returned with a doctor.

"Please what's happening." he asked

"Sir, you need to calm down, labour isn't progressing. We are considering an emergency cesarian section, you need to come with us so you can sign the necessary documents" the doctor said.

Kambili was agitated, his heart was racing.

They gave him the consent form and he signed it.

He requested to see her. so he followed them to the delivery room and saw Sarah lying down helplessly and weak tears dropped from his eyes because of her condition.

He got closer, held her hands and encouraged her.

He turned to the doctor.

"Please, whatever happens, save my wife and my unborn child."

"Ok." the doctor replied

The doctor asked the midwives to move her to the theatre.

As they were leaving for the theatre, Sarah began to scream. They stopped.

"What is it," one of the midwives asked.

"Please!! Please!!," she continued screaming, pointing at a space. They held her.

Kambili was frightened.

Then she gave a louder scream and lost consciousness.

Kambili rushed to where she was.

"Sarah sa..!!" he stuttered as he tried to revive her.

The doctor excused him and quickly wore her a bag-mask device connected to an oxygen source but it seemed to be too late already.

The doctor removed the mask and checked her heartbeat and that of the baby. He discovered that both had already stopped breathing.

"Doctor what is happening."

"I'm sorry, we lost her and the baby."

"Oh my God! What is happening to me?" Kambili wailed at the labour room.

He was led out of the labour ward. He sat in the waiting room devastated. He managed to call his uncle and informed him about the situation.

His uncle came immediately.

Kambili saw him coming and couldn't hold back his tears.

"Not again, this can't be happening again. Who did we offend?" his uncle said.

He held Kambili close to his chest.

"My son ndo oo, I must get to the root of this."

I as your father I must find a solution to this it must end from now

Kambili wept uncontrollably.
