As we approached the imposing wooden door at the end of the corridor, my heart thudded louder in my chest. The guards halted, their presence a silent reminder of the gravity of the situation.

A grand mahogany desk dominated the center of the room, its surface cluttered with scrolls and tomes. Velvet drapes framed tall windows, through which the faint outline of distant mountains could be seen.
