Well Kai's Dead.

Laying in a hospital bed, having just come out of a coma from a heart attack, Kai Thompson was thinking about his life and everything he had done to get to this point. He was 75 years old, and it was the year 2084. He had had a longer life than he thought he would have, but with that long life—the lost loves, the different jobs he had worked, and the places he had lived—was a long list as well, and they were all coming back to him as he lay in the hospital.

"What would have happened if I had stayed in my hometown and not moved?"

"What would life have been like with her?"

"If only I had worked harder so I could have bought that car."

He knew he wasn't long for this world; the doctors had told him as much. But as these thoughts became more vivid, just as he started seeing the people he cared about, the mistakes he had made, and the places where he grew up, it all vanished.

He was left in a kind of limbo. He knew he was dead now, with nothing but a black space around him, faint sounds but no feeling. After the initial shock about his predicament, his thoughts slowly drifted back to his life and where it all went wrong. He didn't have a bad life per se, but it was filled with wrong turns, wrong decisions that haunted him. Slowly, although unknown to Kai, he grew tired, and his eyes were getting heavier and heavier until eventually, he passed out.

Bang!

He was jolted awake by a loud noise. Lifting his head, Kai found himself in a school chair with an angry teacher standing over him. He looked around in disbelief.

"What is going on? Was it all a dream? No! I have lived a full life. Why am I here?" Kai vividly remembered his life; he had been 85 in the hospital and now he wakes up to this? Rubbing his face, he looked up at the teacher, "Sorry sir, late night," as the teacher gave him a detention slip. "I'll see you after your last class for an hour detention, Mr. Thompson."

Kai was bewildered but tried to keep it together. Everyone was looking at him now, but he could shrug their stares off. Kai searched his memories for his school life and started to recognize where he was.

Silvergrove High School—he had transferred here last year when his family moved from the U.K. to America. Judging by the teacher who just woke him up and the classmates he had around him, he'd be in his last year of school, in grade 12. As he was deep in his thoughts about his time at Silvergrove, he was slapped on the back by a familiar face.

"Hey Kai, are you ready for gym class? It's soccer today!"

"Hey, yeah! Of course," Kai responded, trying to remember who this person's name was. He recognized them but hadn't seen this guy since school. "Ah, I don't think I have my gym bag, though," as, of course, he couldn't remember what he had brought that day. He was still trying to come to terms with everything.

"Yeah, you do, haha, it's right here," the guy picked up his gym bag that was slung on his chair. "Ah, yeah, so I do!"

As Kai turned back around, ready to pack up his belongings, obviously having missed the bell ringing while he was internally going crazy, he noticed a small icon in his vision. "What in the world..." He checked his phone, relating the two after seeing the mail icon to his bottom right. "No notifications on my phone... What the hell is this just floating there?" Oblivious to his internal strife, Jake just stood there waiting for Kai to get up so they could walk to gym class together.

Freaking out still, Kai couldn't quite work out why this was here. "Is this some alternate reality with this technology? What is this?" he turned to his new old friend. "Hey, did you just get a new message in front of you?" It was the best he could come up with, having not known the guy's name or if this was normal. He decided to play it ambiguous, giving him some room for explanation. With a confused expression, he pulled out his phone. "Umm, nope, no messages right now."

Kai had kind of confirmed that what he was seeing in his vision wasn't quite normal, but still, he'd have to make sure. Thinking of needing some private space to freak out about everything so far, he picked everything up and left for the bathroom, with a confused new/old friend in tow. Kai ran straight into a stall and shouted to his friend to go on ahead, sitting down he just held his head in his hands for a couple of minutes, having just awakened to his youth his head was spinning.

"Okay, okay, if what I'm seeing is real, I've come back to my youth. Even if it's not real and my whole life had been a dream up until now, I need to make the right decisions. I need to not waste this." Sitting back on the toilet as his heartbeat started normalizing, he remembered the icon in his vision. Reaching out to touch it, it expanded.

"Welcome to your training period. You have been sent back in time to your youth to get to grips with your newly awakened power! Use these 5 years to become comfortable with this power, and at the end of this training period, you will be sent to a new world!"

Kai just stared at the message in disbelief. This was all blowing his mind, but he'd be lying if he said this didn't excite him. He had always loved reading about reincarnation and transmigration, but to think it was a reality was unbelievable, amazing, exciting! With a slight smile forming on his face just as he was getting to grips with the idea that this was all happening to him, the message closed itself, and a new icon appeared right next to the message icon, a stopwatch.

This is the first chapter of a story i've been thinking about for a while, hope there is more to come!
