Together

"Beatrice and I are dating."

His mother turned around and stared at us saying nothing for a few awkward seconds. Afterwards, she gently smiled at us. "Why, that's wonderful news."

She went back to preparing food without saying anything more. She appeared delighted by the news. I sighed in relief. I hoped the rest of his family members would be happy about it as well.

The evening passed quietly. Gene's father and sister eventually came home. They still remembered me and began asking us all about school. Thankfully, it didn't feel awkward being with them.

Once the clock struck eight, we knew we had to get going to catch the last train home.

"Are you sure you can't stay any longer?" Gene's mother was sad to see us go.

"We'll come back to visit," Gene replied.

"You're always welcome to come back anytime."

After giving us some warm drinks in a thermos and hard boiled eggs to eat on the way home, his family saw us off at the train station.
