"Yes, Mr. White?" Auriel moved closer.

"She will be your new partner."

"What?" He couldn't believe it.

"What?" I also couldn't believe it.

"This is a brilliant way to display your loyalty towards the society, Ms. Peony. I expect great results from both of you." Mr. White smiled before turning around to leave. "Both of you enjoy the rest of the night!"

Once he was gone, Auriel shook his head. "Well, this is just brilliant."

"So I have to steal books with you?" I asked.

"That's the gist of it, yes."

"Oh. This is bad." I realized the extent of what I had gotten myself into.

"Indeed."

"What happens if I don't do it?"

"They're going to send someone after you."

"Oh. This is bad."

He sighed. "You shouldn't have come here today."

"Yeah. You're right, but I came here to make sure Gene is alright. I still haven't seen him around."

He seemed surprised to hear my words. "Are you worried about him?"

"Yeah. I hope he's not here in this party."
