Three o'clock in the evening.
There was a sound of footsteps on the steps outside the cabin in which Jack was imprisoned, and Jack was suddenly in high spirits,-the man who could get himself out had come at last!
To his disappointment, however, the visitors were not the beautiful young man with whom he had agreed to meet yesterday, but two physically robust and tall men. One held a candlestick and a dagger, the other a coil of rope. With the night wind blowing and the flames of the candles constantly flickering, casting the figures of the two men shakily against the wall, coupled with their rude looks and unkempt hair, it was almost as if they were two demons that had walked out of hell.
Jack and Tim trembled even more.
