The Marriage Contract: His Conspiracy

Meeting after many years, my ex-boyfriend had become an extremely powerful man. He asked me, "Do you regret dumping me?" I nodded quietly. Getting the answer that he wanted, the arrogant ex-boyfriend left, leaving me alone at a bustling party full of …people. I thought our fate would end like that. I thought he would continue to put on his cold face and do something to hurt me but he unexpectedly proposed to me. No, he wanted me to sign a marriage contract, to be exact. Without thinking much, I nodded in agreement. Approaching his world, I was startled to discover that his world is not as peaceful as I thought. There were so many unanswered questions in my head: Did he still love me? Why did he marry me? What was he up to? I knew Alex had a plot, he was not the one who could throw all of his pride over and over again to hold on to a girl but I still agreed to marry him. This was the only opportunity for me to be with him again.

Chapter five. He is about to get married

Didn't appear in places that didn't belong to me and didn't get involved with people who couldn't be with me, that was the maxim that I had been following for many years. This party was a place that didn't belong to me and neither was Alex.

Maybe his invitation was just out of politeness, but it really made my heart flutter.

Right after leaving the party. I immediately called my best friend, Lily. The phone only rang two times and she immediately picked up.

"Has Alex lost his memory?" I asked hastily.

"What are you saying?" Lily was still sleepy.

Lily wass a flight attendant, often flying back and forth between many countries with different time zones, so her living habits were not like ordinary people.

Whenever there was no flight schedule, she would sleep to make up for the previous tiring days.

"Did Alex lose his memory?" I asked again, unable to hide the haste in my voice.

Please tell me he didn't lose memory, tell me he was still healthy and happy. Please tell me that he deliberately ignored and treated me as a stranger just because he hated me.

After all the hurt I had done to Alex, I didn't expect us to get back together, I just wanted him to have a peaceful and healthy life.

"Alex? Which Alex?" Lily was skeptical. "Don't tell me it's Alex, your ex-boyfriend!"

"It's him." I tried to keep the calm in my voice.

"IS the sun rising in the west?" Lily laughed loudly. "Honestly, I didn't expect I could still hear Alex's name coming out of your mouth."

Since breaking up with Alex, I hadn't mentioned him, nor had I tried to avoid gatherings where Alex might appear. I once prayed to God, hoping that I would never see him again, but fate let us meet again at the time when I thought I had forgotten him.

I didn't know if this was my luck or my unhappiness.

Lily still hasn't replied so I reminded her. "Stop talking nonsense, quickly answer my question."

Lily was very sociable, she still kept in touch with many old friends so she would definitely have information about Alex.

"What did you just ask me?" Lily innocently asked back.

Sometimes talking to her made me mad because she often forgot what I just said.

"Alex lost his memory, didn't he?" I sighed and asked again.

"Lost memory?" Lily was amazed. "You're not kidding me are you? I don't know a certain Alex, but Alex, your ex-lover certainly doesn't lose his memory, he still keeps in contact with his classmates, how can he lose his memory!"

"Today I met Alex, he didn't recognize me. He was even surprised when I called his name. I don't think he's pretending." I calmly recounted.

Lily on the other end of the line was silent for a moment, then spoke up. "I'm quite busy these days, I don't have time to contact everyone, so I'm not sure. Maybe he's really lost his memory, or maybe he just wants to say goodbye to the past and live a new life. After all, he is also a good friend, even though he has become rich, he still keeps in regular contact with his old classmates and attends all the class meetings."

Lily enthusiastically talked about Alex until she noticed my silence that she stopped.

"He's a really good guy." I whispered, my voice quieter than breathing.

He had always been a good guy, a good friend, a good boyfriend who was always ready to help his friends in difficult times and always cared about his girlfriend. A pragmatic and heartless girl like me didn't deserve his love.

"You're good too." Lily comforted me. Only she understood and sympathized with me. When I felt tired, I could only find her.

"Has he lived well these years?" I lowered my voice.

Lily never told me about Alex for fear of hurting me. I only heard from Alex from other friends who didn't really care about me. They often talked about nice things about Alex with the intention of making me feel regret so I was not sure Alex's life was as good as they had said.

"Do you want to hear the truth or…"

"I want to hear the truth." I interrupted Lily.

"A few years ago, Alex was not very good. He started a business but failed many times. He single-mindedly wanted to succeed to prove to you that you were wrong but reality was harsh. Although he was very talented, an ordinary man without money or relationships like him was difficult to succeed. Those years he was really miserable but now things are getting better, he has everything he wanted, I heard he is going to…"

Lily left off her sentence, which made me curious.

"What is he going to do?" I lost my temper.

I was scared of Lily saying some bad news but considering her eager tone, it didn't seem like it was bad news.

"Nevermind." Lily raised her voice. "Anyway, Alex is no longer related to you, so don't worry about his business anymore. You and I have not talked for a long time, I have many interesting things to tell you, we shouldn't talk about unpleasant things."

"We've only had a few days without talking." I smiled softly. "Tell me what you're going to say." I begged her.

Lily didn't like to change the subject every time she talked. When we discussed something, she would say everything she wanted to say and then move on to another topic. Her attitude right now was nothing like her usual style.

"You really want to hear it?" Lily confirmed.

"Yes!" I replied.

Lily was silent for a long time before she spoke in a low voice. "Alex is getting married soon."

I was stunned, her words were like a needle piercing my heart but I didn't even have the right to be sad,

It was I who abandoned him. It was I who gave up our love.

I didn't even have the courage to ask Lily if her information was correct.

He was about to get married?

Would his future wife be that woman at the party?

We were not so young anymore, some of my friends were married but I never thought Alex would get married.

Maybe I really hadn't given up as completely as I thought.

Even so, it didn't change anything.

I betrayed him and he wouldn't forgive me, that was an irrevocable fact.
