A Chance in Hell
Life can be a playground. Life can be sadistic. Life can be indifferent. Life can be balanced. Life can be completely unpredictable.
Life can be all and more, for better and for worse.
The world seemed poised to bend to the will of Nathan Winters, even though he never had any ambition to do so. He had nearly every imaginable advantage to realize his dreams, and for a time, he did realize them.
He seemed to have found his niche, but Life, Destiny, and the world chose otherwise.
Now, the man with so much going for him is, at least in his mind, left helpless. Little of what he has gives him any solace. For the past year, he has not been living, only merely existing. Even his advantages feel like they have become curses to him. Money, knowledge, skills, connections, what little fame and power he had - none of them help anymore.
Life and the world might very well have nothing more to offer him - certainly nothing to give him reason or motivation to live again.
Why should they, when most now only know him as a devil - if they know him at all?
Should he try to find his place in Hell? Is there even a Hell to begin with, or must he make his own place somewhere somehow?
Whether or not Hell is real, there may come a time when one must take a chance in it.
[A/N: There is some degree of alternate history, mainly for the setting of the story. The divergence occurs near the end of the 20th century, so expect differences from then on.]
