Chapter Two

After signing, Charles went and laid down on the couch, staring at the ceiling.

At that moment, the old cellphone in his pocket started to ring. Only by looking at it, one could already tell that it was cheap and worthless.

Charles looked at the phone. It was a call from his old acquaintance, Rosalie Winters, the person he had put in charge of his surprise for Elizabeth.

"Mr. Alistair, I have finished setting up the venue for your date with your wife. Also, the dress that you requested will arrive at your house any moment from now. Jasper will bring your suit when it's time.

"Would you like me to arrange anything else, sir?"

Charles sighed after listening to Rosalie.

He had taken a day off work to be with Elizabeth before taking her to the surprise date he had been eagerly planning for.

But, now that the date was all set up, he will not be able to bring Elizabeth over to the place again.

Knowing that Rosalie was waiting for a response, Charles replied, "Rosalie, invite your boyfriend and have dinner with him at the venue."

Rosalie was quiet for a second before saying, "Sir? Aren't you supposed to bring your wife over?"

Charles felt a headache coming on. "Enjoy your night, Rosalie," Charles said and before the other person could reply, he turned off his phone and tossed it aside.

'Now that the deed is done, is there any need to reveal my identity?' he wondered.

The next day, Charles returned to the hotel where he had been working as a cleaner for the past two years.

He had just finished cleaning the last room on the VIP floor and was about to leave the hotel since his shift was ending.

Just then, his phone began to ring.

Charles saw that it was the hotel's manager calling and he quickly answered.

"COME TO THE VIP FLOOR NOW!" the manager yelled and ended the call.

Charles did not have any idea why the man was angry. He hurriedly placed his bag on a bench in the locker room and went to the place.

On the VIP floor, a group of people were gathered in front of the room he had just finished cleaning. Among them, he immediately noticed Elizabeth, his ex-wife. She was standing in front of the room with her hand wrapped around a man's arm.

On seeing the man, Charles guessed that the man was the person responsible for Elizabeth's pregnancy and he was instantly filled with rage.

However, he composed himself and moved closer to the gathering, going up to the manager immediately.

"Sir, you called for me."

The manager turned to face Charles and his expression darkened. Even though he did not want to believe the allegations against the person in front of him, he had to follow principles.

"Charles, Robin said that it was you who handled the cleaning of this room. Is that true?"

Charles nodded. "Yes, Mr. Smith. I cleaned the VIP and the VVIP floors today. Did something happen?"

The manager sighed and nodded. "Yes, Charles. Did you see someone go into this room?"

Charles shook his head. He did not see anyone go into the room.

But…

"What happened, sir?" He asked.

"Well…" The manager did not know where to start without sounding like he was doubting Charles. "Mrs. Bryon here says that her jewelry is missing from the drawers. Did you see anyone taki—"

"Oh, come off it, Mr. Smith!" A man's voice cut through the air.

Charles turned to see that it was the man whose hand Elizabeth was holding.

"What Mr. Smith means to ask is "why did you steal my fiance's jewelry?" the man asked.

Charles frowned. What the man meant was that he had stolen the jewelry.

"Excuse me sir. With all due respect, I am not a thief. Therefore, I didn't steal anything from your room," Charles retorted politely.

However, the man smirked. "Are you sure? My fiancee here said she saw you snooping through her drawers when she happened to pass by and saw the door open."

Then, the man looked at Elizabeth with a tender smile and asked, "Right, baby?"

Baby…?

Elizabeth's face reddened and she nodded quickly. "Yes, Raymond. I saw this thief searching the room when he was cleaning. He had left the door halfway open and did not expect that I would catch him," she answered coquettishly.

"Elizabeth?"

Charles was surprised. He did not expect that Elizabeth was the fiancee the man was talking about.

Even more, he did not expect that she would side with the man and call him a thief!

"What?!" Elizabeth glared at Charles and hissed. "Are you going to deny it?"

Charles could not respond but only looked at her in shock.

Nearby, Mr. Smith was starting to sweat. Mr. Raymond Bryon is a guest that he did not wish to offend.

However, he could not simply remain quiet and watch them conclude on his employee's character.

He turned to Elizabeth and Raymond and said, "Mr. Bryon, Mrs. Bryon, please let me handle this matter according to the rules."

He then turned to Charles and said impatiently, "Look, Charles, if you took Mrs. Bryon's jewelry, please bring them so that we can sort this issue out without creating a ruckus.

"However, if you refuse, we will have to use force to get them from you and you would not want that."

Charles did not expect that Mr. Smith would doubt him too.

He said, "Mr. Smith, for two years I have worked for you earnestly. How can you doubt me now? I said I didn't take the jewelry. Why don't you believe me?"

"Two years?" Elizabeth sneered with her nose in the air. "Who knows how many items you've stolen but no one ever caught you? Did you think you were invincible?"

Charles bit his lower lip as he felt his heart pulsing harder with anger.

"Charles, just bring the jewelry and we can apologize to Mr. Bryon and his wife so that all of this will end!" Mr. Smith declared in frustration.

Hearing this, Charles knew that there was no way out except he would vindicate himself.

In a fit of anger, he announced, "Fine! If all of you doubt me this much, then why don't you check my bag? It's in the locker room! Check it for yourselves and see that I am not a thief!"
