Maia ran through the forest, branches slapping her face, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The werewolf was close behind, its growls echoing through the trees. Panic surged through her veins as she stumbled over roots and fallen branches, trying to put as much distance between her and the beast as possible. She could feel its hot breath on her neck, hear the pounding of its heavy paws on the forest floor.
Just as she thought she might escape, Maia tripped on an unseen root, sprawling onto the ground. She scrambled to get up, but it was too late. The werewolf pounced, its claws outstretched, and just as it was about to sink its teeth into her throat, she woke up with a start.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she sat up in bed, the early morning light filtering through her window. She glanced at the clock: 6 a.m. Shaking off the remnants of the nightmare, she got up and dressed for work at The Stockyard, the bar her father owned.
As she walked into the bar, the familiar smells of wood and whiskey greeted her. She found Flora and Damien already there, waiting for her.
"Morning, Maia!" Flora called out, her bright smile contagious. Flora was petite with curly auburn hair and a bubbly personality that could light up any room.
"Hey," Damien said, giving her a nod. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with an easygoing demeanor that balanced Flora's energy perfectly.
"Hey, guys," Maia replied, trying to shake off the lingering unease from her dream. "Thanks for coming by."
"Our offices are on leave," Flora said with a shrug. "Thought we'd spend the day with you."
"Sounds perfect," Maia said, feeling a bit of the tension ease from her shoulders.
They spent the morning catching up while Maia worked. Flora chatted animatedly about her latest projects, while Damien offered sarcastic commentary that had them all laughing. The Stockyard's manager, a grizzled man named Hank, was more than willing to let Maia leave early, partially because he didn't want any trouble with her father.
After getting Hank's approval, Maia, Flora, and Damien headed out for a day of fun. They went shopping at the local mall, where Flora dragged them into every clothing store.
"Try this one on, Maia!" Flora insisted, holding up a stunning red dress.
Maia laughed but obliged, emerging from the dressing room to approving nods from both Flora and Damien.
"Looking good," Damien said with a grin. "That one's a keeper."
They bought a few more items before heading to an arcade. Damien immediately challenged Maia to a game of air hockey, and they battled it out fiercely while Flora cheered them on. Next, they played a few rounds of a shooting game, where Maia's training paid off as she effortlessly hit every target.
"Remind me never to play against you," Damien said, mock-defeated.
By lunchtime, they were starving and decided to try a new restaurant that had recently opened. They ordered a feast: sizzling steaks, garlic mashed potatoes, crispy onion rings, and a rich chocolate cake for dessert.
"This is amazing," Flora said between bites. "We should do this more often."
Maia nodded, savoring the moment. It was good to spend time with her friends, to feel normal for a while.
As the sun began to set, Damien turned to Maia with a mischievous glint in his eye. "How about a little adventure?"
"What do you have in mind?" Maia asked warily.
"Let's go to the woods and check out the hunters' base," Damien suggested. "Just a bit of scouting. It'll be fun."
Flora looked intrigued, and despite her initial hesitation, Maia found herself agreeing. They drove to the edge of the woods and started their trek.
The forest was dense, the shadows growing longer as night approached. Maia's earlier nightmare crept back into her mind, but she shook it off, focusing on the present.
They were just getting to the thick of the woods when suddenly, a low growl echoed through the trees. Maia's heart skipped a beat as a large wolf stepped into their path, its eyes gleaming with predatory intent.
It's eyes had that unnatural glow to it, and Maia did not even need to be a hunter to know what that creature is.
"Run!" Damien shouted, and they took off through the woods.
The wolf was fast, closing the distance with terrifying speed. Maia's heart pounded in her ears as she pushed herself to run faster. Flashbacks of her nightmare flooded her mind, the sense of foreboding growing stronger.
"Maia, over here!" Flora called, pointing to a narrow path. They veered off, but the wolf was relentless.
Maia stumbled, the memory of her dream playing out in real life. She hit the ground hard, and the wolf was upon her, its jaws snapping dangerously close to her throat. Time seemed to slow as she braced herself for the end.
But then, Damien was there, swinging a heavy log with all his might. He struck the wolf, knocking it away from Maia. For a moment, they were safe.
"Get up!" Damien urged, pulling Maia to her feet.
Maia was a bit confused. She could've sworn that this was her end, but somehow things completely took a turn. It was at that moment she had that realisation that she hadn't even experienced the full dream.
The wolf got back up, its eyes filled with rage. It was preparing to strike again when a larger wolf with blue and gold eyes appeared. The newcomer snarled, and the first wolf immediately backed down.
The larger wolf shifted, morphing into a human. It was Kai, the Alpha.
"As much as you want to stay away from me, you just can't, can you?" Kai said, his eyes locked on Maia.
Maia's breath caught in her throat. She didn't know how to respond, the day's events catching up with her in a rush. Kai's presence, his command over the other wolf, left her both relieved and confused.
"Kai," she finally managed, her voice trembling.
Kai's expression softened slightly, but his eyes remained intense. "Come on, let's get you out of here."
He led them back through the woods, keeping a protective eye on the surrounding shadows. Maia's mind raced with questions, but for now, she was just grateful to be safe. As they reached the edge of the forest, she glanced back at Kai.
He nodded at her, and she nodded back. That kind of appreciative but tentative nod that signified that both parties had a lot of explaining to do. But that wasn't going to be today.
Maia was just happy to be safe. Together, the trio emerged from the woods and took a cab back to their various homes, each of them too stunned to speak about what they just witnessed.
