Hidden Truths with a Demon

Morain took Mia deep into the wood for her training. Upon arriving at her destination Mia finally regained consciousness. "Huh? Where are we?" Mia asked.

"Oh, your awake now?" Morain said as she put Mia down. "I brought us somewhere far away from the village because you are about to learn attack magic. Well the fundamentals at least."

"I am excited about it!" Mia said with glee.

"Well, first allow me to show you what an attack spell is." Morain lifted her hand and an orb of condensed air started to form near her palm. "This here is a wind ball." Morain explained. "A basic wind ball can be used to knock down opponents. Can also be used as a disarming tool if aimed correctly." Morain then shot her wind ball towards a tree leaving a small bit of bare wood. "As you can see it stripped the bark right off that tree. That kind of force can easily knock a weapon out of someone's hand."

"Oh wow!" Mia was amazed. She had never seen an attack spell before; she had never fought a mage type demon. "Do you think I could try that?" Mia asked.

"Well that's what I brought you out here for!" Morain teased. "We can destroy things to our hearts content and not affect the village." Morain smiled. "Now lift your hand and focus on the area in front of it. Use magic sense to feel the wind directly in front of your hand."

Mia lifted her hand as instructed and focused with all she had. "I feel the wind. Now what do I do?" Mia asked.

"This is the tricky part. You need to become one with the wind that you feel." Morain explained. "You need to feel as if that wind is an extension of yourself. Remember you are not commanding it; you are becoming one with it."

Mia closed her eyes and tried to do as Morain instructed. Minutes passed and nothing was happening. Still Mia kept trying determined to show results. Hours passed and still Mia continued to try and connect with the wind. Morain had leaned up against a tree and was taking a nap. She knew that it would take Mia a while to learn this spell, but she had confidence that Mia would eventually master it. Finally, Mia heard a faint voice in her head.

"Child of man, does thou seek our power?" The mysterious voice said.

Without hesitation Mia responded. "Yes!" She shouted.

"Do you accept yourself as equal, and not above or below?" The voice continued.

   "Yes!" Mia responded again.

"Feel us then and become one with us." The voice commanded.

Mia focused on the voice and let herself give in to the energy she felt. It felt like her mind had been transported to a vast windy field for that is what she saw in her head. Infront of her sat a spirit that was translucent and green. "Hello." Mia addressed the spirit in front of her.

"Very interesting." The spirit said. "You are the first to see us. This is very interesting indeed. Child of man, would you like to make a pact with us the spirit of the wind?" The spirit asked.

"What would I have to do?" Mia asked.

"Agree to allow us to experience the world through you and our power will be yours." The spirit answered. "We will become a part of you and live with you."

"Will I still be me?" Mia asked, worried that she would lose herself to the spirit.

"Yes, child of man, you would retain all of yourself, we would just feel what you felt and see the world through your eyes." The spirit continued.

"Can I ask another question?" Mia asked.

"Go ahead child of man." The spirit answered.

"I was told that magic was echoes from the Goddess and leftovers from what she had touched." Mia explained. "Is magic that or is it something more?"

The spirit laughed. "Very good child of man! Exceptionally good! We co-exist with the Goddess, we great elements. The Goddess herself is the element of creation. I am the element of wind. There are others, one of fire, one of earth, one of water, and one of destruction. The Goddess created herself a physical form, so she is all that is known to creation. When we other elements act, you mortals view it as leftovers of her power, or her will. Which to some extent that is true. We can only communicate with a few select souls, but no one has ever seen us before, much less talked to us."

"By select souls, do you mean mages?" Mia asked.

"If that is what you mortals call them then yes." The wind spirit answered. "Only those individuals can use real magic because only they can feel us. The other magics, such as fortification, healing, and the like are leftovers from the Goddess as they suspect. So, we understand why they would believe that we too are just part of the Goddess." The wind spirit paused. "We actually have another request for you as well, child of man."

"What do you need great spirit?" Mia asked.

"If you chose to make a pact with us, please teach others of our existence." The spirit asked. "It would be nice to be known, finally."

Mia thought about what the best course of action would be. "By making this pact and leaving me still in charge of my body, doesn't that give me command of your power? Isn't that against the rules of casting magic?" Mia had so many questions.

"Yes, normally for someone to use our power they must become one with our essence, and then we will allow them to use a small portion of our power." The spirit answered. "Partly because they believe as you did, that we are part of the Goddess. We grant you this pact in hopes of experiencing the world as the Goddess does. We do not mind sharing our power as you share your body. We just want to be able to feel."

"Will you still exist outside of me as well?" Mia asked, she wondered if she accepted the pact if it would stop all other mages from using wind magic.

"Fear not for the other mages, like the Goddess has left echoes so have we." The spirit must have read Mia's mind. "They will still be able to cast wind magic. We never let them have more than an echoes worth of power anyway."

"I accept your pact." Mia finally agreed. With that the wind spirit smiled and moved slowly towards Mia's body. The closer the spirit got the more it faded away until finally it vanished upon reaching her. Mia was back in reality now, Morain was next to her shouting.

"Mia wake up!" Morain yelled. "You did it, you made a wind ball!"

Mia turned to look at the ball in front of her hand and she had indeed done it. Mia then smiled wanting to test her new ability as the partner of the wind. She grew the ball and grew the ball until finally it touched the ground it was so large in diameter. When it reached that size, Mia released it into the forest. It obliterated trees for hundreds of yards leaving only a cleared dirt area where the trees once stood.

Morain just looked on in awe. No one had ever performed a wind spell of that magnitude before, the best she had ever done was completely strip a tree of its bark. "Mia, what? How?" Morain was at a loss for words.

Mia just smiled at Morain and said. "I have a lot of things I need to explain to you about magic." With that Mia and Morain walked back to the village as Mia explained everything that she learned from the wind spirit to Morain.
