The hospital released Maverick, and our dad and uncles headed home. They said they had to take care of something at home.
I helped Maverick into his house and got him settled into bed. Once he was all situated, I sat with him.
/"It’ll be okay,/" I told Maverick.
/"You won’t look at me differently, will you?/"
/"No, why?/"
/"I don’t want you to see me differently./"
I furrowed my brows.
/"Mav, Clay and his goons beat and assaulted you. Three guys jumped you and did horrible things to you. None of it was your fault./" I crawled over to him as he looked down. I lifted his face. /"Look at me. What have you always told me?/"
/"It wasn’t your fault, and you didn’t deserve it. You’re a kind, decent person who deserves kindness./"
/"Exactly, and the same goes for you./" I wrapped my arms around him. He wrapped his arms around me as we held each other.
