The candour was appreciated. But only to an extent— had he tried to bubble wrap it and decorate it in a shrine of bullshit to soften the blow, it would have pissed me off. The bluntness still did, but there was an element of understanding that hosed down the spark of initial fury.
/"You're a parent now, Sterling,/" he said softly. /"You'd do the same, would you not?/"
There had never been a conflict upon who I was. I was selfish and cruel. I would have let the world burn to ashes at my feet just because some dumb bastard dared to doubt I'd be ready to strike the match. I'd always been careless with other people's safety. I didn't have to be a parent to use that as an excuse.
Being a parent, if anything, had the complete opposite effect.
