Chapter 8: Lies and Blood

Mary-Allison

Out of the tunnel, out onto the broken slate and ashen stained columns. I’m out of breath, Christopher dragged me through the tunnel without me even pulling out my torch. He must come here more often than he lets on—There’s probably a lot that he doesn’t let on about. Who is he? I’ve spent two full days with him and I’m not any closer to knowing that answer than when I first saw him on the ferry.

“You know your way to the castle from here, yeah?”

Um, what?

“You’re not coming with me?”

Christopher feels so far away even though he hasn’t moved from my side. I thought we were connecting—Did he just want to screw me… no, I don’t believe that’s it, he didn’t even finish. Something happened back there, like when those strange noises were calling me earlier in the day. Maybe he hears them too?

“Christopher, you can tell me what’s wrong—I promise I won’t judge. I’m a very open person.”

“Except you’re not, Mary.”
