Nigel had done his best this past few days to stay out of the radars of the guild because of Nathan. He didn't know why he had accepted to take this boy in the first place, but for some weird reason he felt that it was okay to be with someone who was wanted by the most dangerous group he knew.
It had been three days since he took Nathan in and neither had spoken to the other. The only words that crossed Nigel's lips were those that reminded the boy of their timetable. He didn't exactly know what to say to the boy, or what to do with him. All he knew about Nathan was his name and his abilities.
Nigel wasn't a social being, and that fact had already been established in more ways than the man expected. He didn't know how to start a conversation and only spoke when he was spoken to. But in this situation, Nigel had decided to make the first move. He knew that if they wanted to survive the Guild then he had to solidify their relationship and create a suitable atmosphere for communication between the two of them.
He didn't know much about his brother, and he was hoping he would change that.
"So Nathan, do you have any friends at home?" Nigel started. He knew it was a bit personal, but he honestly didn't know what else to ask the boy.
Nathan dropped the two blades in his possession and looked up to the figure sitting in front of him. There was no doubt he was surprised by the man's words, and his facial expressions did nothing to cover up the shock. He hadn't expected Nigel to talk to him at all, and he wasn't prepared to start a conversation either.
"Not really. Nobody knows I exist outside our family" Nathan reminded and Nigel felt stupid.
He had completely forgotten that no one in their family had a normal childhood, and Nathan's existence was a secret.
"I'm sorry" Nigel Apologized and Nathan smiled.
"Why don't you tell me more about this Cult of yours and what they really do" Nathan suggested.
Nigel lifted his face and locked eyes with his brother. He hadn't expected such question, but at the same time he was happy the boy asked. He was going to tell him about it sooner or later.
Nigel understood that their parents never spoke of the Guild to Nathan and kept everything related to it far from the boy. They didn't want him endangering himself out of curiosity, but Nigel also understood Nathan wasn't a dumb child.
He could tell the boy had done his own research and knew the basics about the Guild.
He hesitated for a bit and thought well about his reply. A part of him wanted to keep the boy as far away from the Guild as possible, while another part of him demanded that he relayed every information he knew to Nathan. Nigel was confused for a minute, but finally decided to tell the boy everything he needed to know. If they were going to die or live, there was no absolutely no point in hiding things about a group that was after their lives. Nathan deserved to know about the people that were after him. It would be unfair if he denied the boy such crucial information.
Nigel took his time to explain all he knew about the Guild to the curiosity overwhelmed individual beside him. He explained the power system, hierarchy and every little detail he could remember.
He just hoped that the same people he had spoken about don't come looking for them. He was the least ranked grade one, and stood no chance against his Superiors and neither did Nathan.
The power gap between them and the Guild was just something he couldn't dream of covering up within his lifetime. He was realizing just how much danger they were in with every passing minute. And even though it scared him, he didn't show it. He couldn't afford to look weak in front of someone who was looking up to him.
Nathan understood and took in every word his brother said. He was now aware of the dangers they faced, and the need for his mother's worry. He had been overestimating himself, but after hearing all that Nigel had said he was convinced that he hadn't even gotten strong yet. They would get decimated by their enemies if they were ever to be attacked.
He had spent his entire life around his mother and sister, and after surpassing them he had gotten proud and had hung his shoulders way too high. He was nowhere near strong, he was weak compared to the rest of the people that roamed the earth. He had just found a new emotion within himself and he immediately recognized it. Fear. He was afraid and he couldn't hide it. He had never felt this way before. He had been treated like a god since birth, and finding out about beings that could kill him in a second had made him shiver in a way he hadn't done before.
"Nathan!" Nigel called the boy back to reality. The boy was panicking way too much than he had expected, and it wasn't good. Nigel understood the reason to be afraid, but he couldn't allow the boy to drown in his fears. Fear was a killer of ambition and power, and that was the last thing they needed now. "Get a hold of yourself" Nigel urged.
Now that Nathan had realized just how weak they were, the next phase would be training. He wasn't a great teacher himself, but he would do his best to help the boy grow stronger. He needed to get stronger himself. After his defeat at the hands of his last opponent, he really hadn't found the motivation to fight anyone else. He had grown weak and he could feel it. The only way for them to win was for him to sharpen his power once again and grow stronger than he already was.
Nigel rose from where he sat and made his way towards his room only to be stopped by a knock on the door. His eyes immediately signaled for Nathan to make himself scarce and the boy did immediately. He wasn't expecting anybody, and the knock had brought a lot of thoughts to his mind. He calmed himself down and proceeded towards the door.
He made a quick peep through the peephole, and the tension that had welled up in him suddenly vanished. He hadn't expected him to be here, but seeing him was much better than seeing those he had in mind. He was standing right in front of the door, Zayn Owens
