Chapter 41

Alexandria's POV

"Hey Alex, I was wondering if I could ask you something," My beta asked as we walked around the camp, checking in with folk and checking things off the list of things to do today.

"Anytime so long as you're not a cunt about it."

"I checked the news earlier and there was an...incident, that your mate caused. I was just curious if you think he'll be a good fit," He said, there was no disrespect in his tone but the question alone made my blood boil.

"What was this incident?"

"Well, according to the news he walked out of a gas station with sodas, but when the police went inside there was a corpse that looked like it was just a husk. Almost as if their very essence was ripped out of their body."

"Well, firstly, he's a demon and a crime boss, he doesn't exactly play by the book, almost like we do but with less respect. Secondly, he was given to me by the goddess, he may not be a werewolf but I'm not going to deny him just because he's different. Thirdly, this is the last time we will speak of this. Understood?" I asked, not expecting a response as he knew better than to make me mad, not that he would but more so that he knows that there are some questions best left unanswered.

"Of course, Alpha, I wasn't questioning you nor your mate, just considering the possibility that he might pose more of a threat than you realize."

I turned to look at him, but he could tell that my wolf was the one doing the talking as my eyes shifted, and my wolf glared at him with a look that could only be described as 'try me, bitch'.

"He is mine, and that doesn't make him a threat to our pack, that makes him a threat to any enemy we may face. This is the last time we will talk about this, or you'll find yourself cleaning the prison cells for the rest of the week. Got it?"

He hung his head in shame, nodding in agreement, knowing I wasn't angry but I was done talking about it. That summed up our relationship perfectly, I was open to his criticism and interpreted it on my own terms, but if my wolf had to come out to tell him that we were done talking; we were done talking about that topic.

"I may not know what hurdles the moon goddess will bring us, but based on how he seems to handle his problems, and how I handle ours; I'm sure that we won't jump the hurdles, we'll simply destroy them."

"Are you sure that is wise, Alex? What if the hurdles are lessons to be learned?"

"Then we will learn from them, together."

"Wise words, Ma'am," He said as we arrived at the packhouse, approaching two elders who were waiting out front. They saw us approach and stood up as if they wanted a word, but when my beta, Jamie, stepped up they shook their heads.

"This is a message for the alpha, Jamie, not for you. Please head inside and leave us to talk."

"As you wish," He said without hesitation and ventured inside to avoid hearing anything that wasn't meant for him to hear, "Greetings alpha, our story is coming to a close, and yet yours is just beginning. So, to guide you we underwent a sort of 'ritual' to allow the moon goddess to commune with you through us. Would you accept this gift?"

"Yes, I will. Do I need to do anything?"

"Just put your mind at ease, and will your wolf forward."

And I did as they said, allowing Alexis through and taking the back seat, and as I did the elders' eyes changed. From their traditional colors to white and black, a sign that they weren't bluffing.

"Tell me, my child, do you fear your mate or his strength?"

"I believe he should be feared, yes, but I do not fear him, no, I respect him for he is mine."

"A good viewpoint to have, but be aware that while your strength comes from the dawn of night, his comes from a dark place that even we cannot conceive. His power comes from his demon, Jack, and together their power is near limitless. How would you keep him in control as the luna of this pack?"

"I don't really know for sure, he seems to be struggling with the idea that he's worthy of love, and being loved."

"Our final words to you, for this, takes a great amount of strain on our part, would be not to fear the power of your mate, but understand where it comes from. You are a good alpha, and at your core a kind soul, he is your polar opposite in almost every way except for one: Family. When you find yourself an hour of time, meditate on the meaning of family, from his perspective."

"Thank you, Elders, I will not belittle this gift, I appreciate your time and energy," I said as their eyes faded to their traditional colors, and Alexis allowed me back. Judging based on the look on their faces, they knew how much I loved him, but were understandably wary of my mate.

"I swear I shall not betray the trust my pack places in me, I thank you for your time," I said as I went into the packhouse, while their time may not have come yet to move on to their next life, it was approaching and it was not my place to intervene when that time came.

"Jacke, we've got a lot to talk about my love, I hope to see you tonight."
