Chapter 12

“After Wes was born, I took these parenting classes ‘cuz I knew exactly zero about how to take care of a baby. At these classes I met these gay dudes raising this baby together and neither of them came off as gay at all. One guy was a mechanic and the other was a freakin’ cop. It took me a hell of a lot of courage, but eventually we started talking. We had a lot in common and I realized I was gay, just not effeminate.”

Marshall reeled in his line to check to see if the bait was still there. It was. The fish were not biting in this heat. “Go on. What does your family think?”

“The hate it. They don’t understand it. That’s what Will was doing, by the way.”

“What do you mean?”

“When I realized he was doing drugs, I broke up with him. He threated to out me to my family and to Anna’s family unless I paid him two grand.”

“Ouch. So you didn’t steal it from him?”

“No,” said Sean. “But as far as he’s concerned, he kept his mouth shut about me being gay and he earned his money.”
