Inside, mounted on wooden shelves that extended from the ground to the top, were tens of white ceramic urns. They were placed neatly at a proper distance from each other, standing tall like silent guardians.
When vampires died, all they left behind were piles of ash.
The violent nature of vampires' death often did not allow the family members to collect their ashes.
Whenever possible, though, the ash was gathered and put inside one of those white ceramic urns.
Zane's elder sister, Griselda, was a talented artist. In an attempt to pay homage to her deceased family members, she painted their portraits on the urns along with an illustration of their supernatural skills.
