Hazel remembered the incident like it was just happening. She had gotten up one morning with the plan to run away. Her uncle, Shelby, would not allow her to leave no matter how many times she begged. He couldn't bear to see the family in shambles and his sister, Hazel's mother, in grief. Hazel had gotten up that morning, determined and angry. The fact that her parents were out again made her plan look easier.
But the plan flopped when she hugged her uncle and summoned her powers, expecting his eyes to go dark and lifeless so she could perfect her plan. But nothing of such happened. With her feelings all over the place, she remembered pulling back with tears and telling her confused uncle how much she loved him. Well, that was before he died some weeks later...
