"We've searched everything. Shaw must have miscounted," Bellamy said frustrated after they had spent the last three hours searching the entire ship. But with his sister eager to help with the search, he had no choice but to take Octavia with him while Echo, Shaw, and a few others formed their own groups to conduct the search.
Though he really wanted to have Echo by his side during this search, it seemed that the time hadn't been wasted so far, as his and Octavia's relationship already showed significant signs of progress and therefore normalcy. He stood there and watched as she checked out every nook and cranny, even though most of them could barely fit a person, a child at best.
"Not all of it," Octavia said to Bellamy, "there's still plenty of room to crawl through.
"No, I think it's a waste of time," he said into her deaf ears as she continued to search the entire cargo hold.
"Octavia..." Bellamy began again, "Is this what you want? A task to forget the past?"
But Octavia remained silent, still pretending not to hear him. So he had to try again to get her to listen: "O', it's not going to work like this. I promise. I thought the same thing once and... Let me help you"
This finally got her attention as she looked at him with her sharp green eyes. Her eyes looked at him almost innocently, as if the last few weeks had never happened. Or better, years. And he couldn't deny that he really missed those eyes. Not just her eyes, but his sister as a whole. To have her back, to have Clarke back, and to have the probably greatest chance ever to live a life in peace, made him feel slightly but cautiously euphoric. Things weren't perfect yet, but even the slightest progress would get them further towards this goal.
"So what are we going to do then?" Octavia asked him back. When Bellamy struggled to find a quick answer, she rushed forward instead, "Then let's go to Clarke. I want this done..."
"Octavia, stop!" Bellamy shouted at her, eliciting a genuinely shocked reaction from her. For the last three hours she had been the driving force in their search, dragging him like a pet. But now enough was enough. Even though Bellamy knew he had to choose his words carefully and respect their still fragile relationship, he couldn't stand this situation any longer.
"She still needs time to recover, Octavia," Bellamy tried to reason with her, but he already knew as the words left his mouth that it would most likely be in vain. Convincing Octavia, or bringing her to her senses in general, wasn't an easy task. Not for him, and certainly not for anyone else.
"Bullshit, Bellamy. We both know the real reason why she doesn't want to see me. Or why she otherwise avoids Niylah and me..." Octavia said as she thought of this new destination. "You can come with me if you think I'm up to something, but I'm visiting Clarke right now and nothing can stop me..."
"Octavia!" Bellamy called after her as she began to walk quickly away.
"Hey," Echo's voice suddenly rang out from the radio on his belt. He quickly grabbed it, his finger already on the talk button, while chasing his stubborn sister.
"Found something?" He asked right away, not even allowing her to proceed first.
"No, so I guess you found nothing either," she returned.
"Yeah..." Bellamy remarked, "Do you think it's a false alarm?"
"I don't know. Maybe…", Echo said, "But we shouldn't feel too comfortable and get a wrong feel of comfort…"
"Any news from the bunker?" interrupted Bellamy.
"No. And to make matters worse for us, according to Monty's quick count, there is actually no one missing. Not even among the prisoners..."
For a moment Bellamy couldn't make sense of it all. What was going on?
"This is not the news I wanted to hear. It can't be. It just can't be," Bellamy said out loud.
"Raven said something very similar," Echo muttered on the other end, barely legible.
"What are we gonna do now?" Octavia suddenly joined their conversation. Unknown to him, she had slowed down her pursuit of Clarke and instead focused on the news Echo had just delivered. From the look on her face, Bellamy could tell that she, too, was genuinely concerned about the fragments of their conversation she had overheard.
"We better keep our eyes open," Bellamy said to both Echo and Octavia before focusing on his sister. Her eyes lit up and looked back at him.
"There are still places left to hide. And if the person decides to hide for a while, it'll be much harder for us to find this person," Octavia explained, loud enough for Echo to hear. "If there's a person at all. Could be a foul trick on his part, don't you think, Bell?" She added quickly, as she couldn't resist that swipe.
"No," Bellamy said firmly, "Shaw is with us. I have no doubt of his loyalty. But we are all overworked. Maybe that's the tribute. We should be careful and keep our eyes open. But we should also find some rest," he paused as he began to think again.
"We'll find them, Bellamy," Octavia assured him, "First we have to secure the most vulnerable places at all costs. Like the bridge, the medical station..."
"...and the cargo bay," Bellamy finished her sentence. He had to admit that this was actually a very smart idea of hers, and probably the best they could do in this situation anyway. "That sounds like an idea. We need to talk to Dyoza, Kane and Shaw."
"Then let's meet on the bridge," Echo suggested.
"Then it's settled," Bellamy concluded, attaching the radio to his belt before nodding to his sister that he was ready to go.
