Kyle sat up abruptly from the bed, exhaling deeply as he tried to steady himself. His head throbbed with the sudden influx of memories—an entire lifetime's worth, overwhelming his senses.
"Ugh," he murmured, clutching his head in confusion. "Am I Kyle Claudius, or am I Kyle Pierre?" He tugged at his hair, trying to make sense of the flood of images and emotions.
Taking several deep breaths, Kyle cleared his mind and forced himself to focus. "This system is someone's idea of a bad prank to reawaken my past life's memories," he breathed out, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the system display in front of him.
[The simulation has been completed and rewards are being settled.]
[Simulation evaluation: ★★★★★]
[Congratulations on obtaining the 'The Champion Duelist' template.]
Kyle's heart raced as he read the messages. The simulation had felt so real—his love for Furina, his duty to protect Fontaine, the pain of his deteriorating health. Every emotion, every decision, every touch had felt genuine. Now, with the simulation complete, he was left to reconcile his current self with the lifetime of experiences he had just relived.
"Champion Duelist?" he muttered, reading the reward notification again. The memories of his duels, his skill with the rapier, and his unwavering commitment to protect those he loved flashed through his mind.
As he sat there, piecing together his thoughts, he realized an indispensable emotion in his heart. It was a deep, throbbing pain, a yearning that called out for someone. For 'Kyle Claudius,' it was an unfamiliar feeling, but for 'Kyle Pierre,' it had been a constant state of existence—every moment away from his mistress had been agony.
This undeniable emotion was all the signal he needed to reach a conclusion: the simulation was not fake. He and Kyle Pierre were indeed the same person. The memories and experiences were real, and the emotions they evoked were genuine. But more importantly now, he needed to find the woman who has been waiting for him for all these centuries alone.
Determined, Kyle left his room and made his way through the corridors, his heart pounding with urgency. He reached Furina's room to find Clorinde standing guard outside it.
"Sir Kyle, is there something I can help you with?" Clorinde asked, her expression calm but her eyes carried a bit of awe.
Kyle took a deep breath, steadying himself. "Yes, Clorinde. I need to see Furina. It's urgent."
Clorinde nodded, a slight smile playing on her lips. "Lady Furina has already ordered me to let you in if you come."
Kyle felt a surge of relief and gratitude. "Thank you, Clorinde."
With a deep breath, he opened the door without knocking. Inside, he saw a luxurious room bathed in the soft glow of moonlight filtering through the large windows. Furina sat on a chair by the window, her head resting on the windowsill as she dozed off. The glow of the moonlight gave an ethereal feeling to Furina's beauty and Kyle's heart took a critical hit at the sight of her.
It was clear she had been watching the tree outside, likely reminiscing about the day's events.
Kyle approached her quietly, his heart swelling with emotion as he took in the sight of her. Her delicate features were softened in sleep, and he could see the traces of worry and fatigue etched into her face. He gently knelt beside her, his hand lightly brushing a strand of hair away from her face.
"Furina," he whispered softly, his voice filled with tenderness.
Her eyes fluttered open, and she blinked a few times before focusing on him. For a moment, confusion crossed her features, but then recognition and relief washed over her.
"Kyle," she murmured, sitting up straighter. "You're here."
He took her hand in his, squeezing it gently. "Yes, I'm here''
Kyle bent down on his knees as he held her hand and looked at her eyes, "My lady, this knight shows his sincere apologies for being absent from your sight for so long and is ready to accept any punishment for this transgression."
Before he could react, Furina threw herself at him, wrapping her arms around his neck and causing him to fall back onto the floor. She lay on top of him, her eyes filled with joy, relief and pure unadulterated love. Wait why do the water drops in her eyes suddenly look like hearts to him?
"You finally remembered!" she exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion.
"Yes, I do, my love," Kyle replied, his hands encircling her waist and pulling her closer. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling the familiar scent he had missed for so long. "I will never forget again."
Furina tightened her grip, her tears soaking into his shirt. "I waited for so long, Kyle. I never gave up hope."
"I know, there is no one stronger or with more willpower than you, my dear. All of Fontaine and I owe you an immeasurable debt for your service all these years," Kyle said, stroking her hair gently.
Furina listened quietly, burying her face in his neck, finally releasing the tears of pain she had held back for centuries.
"I'm sorry I left you alone for so long," Kyle whispered, his voice filled with remorse. "But never again. I've found a solution to the problem. This won't be just another mortal life. We will never separate again."
Tears welled up in her eyes as she reached out to touch his face, her fingers tracing the familiar lines. "I've waited so long for this moment. I was so afraid you wouldn't remember."
Kyle leaned in, pressing his forehead against hers. "I'm sorry it took so long, but I'm here now. We won't be apart again."
Furina closed her eyes, leaning into his touch. "Promise me, Kyle."
"I promise," he whispered, sealing his vow by a seal of their lips.
In that moment, the pain and sorrow of their separation melted away, leaving only the warmth of their love and the joy of their reunion. They lay there, wrapped in each other's embrace, savoring the precious moments that that had been so hard to reclaim.
