CHAPTER 61

Tristan walked through the hallway of Beacon Hills with Boyd at his side as they made their way towards the field for lacrosse practice.

It could have been boredom but or maybe peer influence but Boyd ended up trying out for lacrosse even though the time for tryouts was long gone and they were halfway through the semester. Well Tristan actually convinced Coach to let Boyd try out and the man couldn't actually say no in good defense after seeing how bulky the black boy was.

Though he was just an average player, due to his physique, he could play the defensive without putting much effort into it.

"Let's go people!" Jackson shouted to hype up the players as Tristan and Boyd entered the locker room.

"Whew! Still don't know what you did to make Jackson and even McCall queasy anytime you enter the room." Boyd said as he easily noticed how Jackson conveniently avoided Tristan's line of sight, while Scott had already left the room the moment the entered.

Tristan scoffed as he heard that. "Jackson was been stupid as usual so… you could say I put him in his place, and as for McCall? Let's just say we don't align well in any way."

Boyd looked confused. "You don't align? Like your zodiacs?"

His words caused Tristan to look at him weirdly but upon thinking a little bit about it, he just shrugged. "Maybe."

"Damn, you really did change huh?" Boyd remarked. As someone who spent most of his daily time with Tristan, he was more aware of the changes his friend had underwent in the past few weeks as compared to when they first met.

"Don't everyone?" The changes Tristan went through wasn't that explosive but to anyone that hung around him, there was a stark undeniable difference with him.

His emotions were more pronounced that they've ever been and while he didn't become more social, he no longer was a piece of stoic wood.

Though rare, he laughed and joked more with Allison and Boyd now so it kind of took them by surprise but they were slowly getting used to it by now.

One thing that never changed however was his unapproachable presence to strangers.

They got to the field at the same time to find out that Coach was grouping them into four teams so those on the bench could play so he could watch and catalogue everyone's improvements in case of any last minute changes.

"Hayes!"

"Yes, Coach."

"Well since you're late, you are being grouped with the leftovers. Try making something good with them, huh kiddo." Coach said to Tristan while also not forgetting to mock the other players.

Since Coach had already picked the teams, Boyd automatically ended up in Tristan's team, something he was thankful for as he knew it was for the other players to get past Tristan. This way he wouldn't have to be so tense with his average play.

"Team Jackson and Team Danny, on the field now. The others run 2 laps around the field. Get on it!" Coach barked out.

After running around the field twice, the remaining players settled themselves as they watched the other two teams play.

The two teams were somewhat evenly matched as it contained equal amount of both good and bad players.

Tristan watched the game with a bored look on his face, not at all invested in the game being played. His mind was in another place all together.

He didn't know why but Allison had told him that the burial was to be held after the formal and her grandfather was already in town, earlier than she had thought.

He didn't know why but he felt as if everything was about to change now with the arrival of Gerard. Even Satomi had warned him about the old man so for sure he was bound to be cautious now. Hopefully Gerard goes back soon after the burial.

"What are you thinking about?" Boyd asked as he saw Tristan zoning out.

"Nothing. Just thinking about something inevitable." Tristan said. It was already best that Allison wasn't already drawing her weapons against them but what if she knew they stood by and did nothing when Derek killed her aunt? Will she still leave things unanswered?

His thoughts stopped as he felt a very familiar gaze on him which ended with him turning his head towards the stands to see Malia waving at him with Allison trailing behind her.

'Well, no use worrying too much about it for now. I have a feeling that I might be the one blowing things out of proportion.'

"Let's go, Tristan. It's our turn now." Boyd prodded him as the game between Danny and Jackson's team ended up with a tied score. Now it was theirs against McCall.

'Great! Now I have to deal with him.' Tristan rolled his eyes as he could feel how skittish Scott already was even from where he was sitting.

The boy had been pestering him about what happened between him, Derek and the Alpha as he haven't seen or heard from Derek since that night.

Scott's persistent pestering had gotten to the point where Tristan had threatened Scott of permanent mutilation and the other had wisely kept his distance away from him ever since.

Walking to the center of the field, Tristan came against a clearly nervous Scott who was putting all his points into confidence in other to play a good game against him.

Tristan naturally knew why Scott was avoiding him. It was all due to fear but due to their natural disposition as supernatural opposites. Even the others in his pack could feel it, but to a very lesser degree due to how long they've known him, but the feeling of death and danger was always around him.

Putting his stick against the ball, Tristan ignored Scott and just focused on the game, making him react way faster that the unfocused Scott, as soon as Coach blew the whistle.

Despite no one saying anything, everyone knew Tristan's team was winning as the boy was very talented in the game and also became their best top scorer in the short time he joined the team.

As expected, Scott's team lost against Tristan's which made the lacrosse team co-captain depressed, not that anyone cared that much.

...

"Are you guys coming to the formal?" Allison asked as they ate lunch at their favorite seat.

"I don't think so. I think I rather binge watch some movies I've been saving up." Boyd said as he shook his head.

"As for us, well it depends. Are you going?" Malia asked back, somehow drawing a wry expression from Allison.

At first she looked confused before it dawned on her and now it was time to snicker.

"What?" Boyd asked as he saw the betrayed look Allison was giving Malia as the latter laughed.

Malia put on a smug smile while Allison covered her face in embarrassment. "She rejected all the guys who asked her out by saying she won't be attending the formal."

Even Tristan couldn't help letting a chuckle escaped him as he realized Allison's conundrum. If they said they were attending then she would have to be the one without a date. Not that attending with a date was necessary, but you know, high school and peer pressure.

"But you told me none of them were good!" Allison lamely defended. It couldn't solely be her fault, right?

"It's not as if she's going to be the one dating them either, is she?" Tristan asked sarcastically which made Allison more aggrieved.

"Why didn't you agree to go with Scott? I thought you use to find him cute?" Malia asked with curiosity.

Allison let out a despondent sigh and slowly shook her head. "Well other than the fact that he seems to be on edge around Tristan, I don't really see myself dating him." And not to mention the fact that she also heard he had deliberately tried to foul Tristan during practice last week, so no.

"Well, I am not a 'dolly up' person so I doubt you will ever see me in a dress so might as well not attend… unless you plan on going solo, which isn't a bad idea by the way." Malia reasoned. She and Tristan had agreed on trying to enjoy high school more so they were going to attend, but she already made it known that she wasn't wearing a dress.

Allison thought about it for a while before her eyes sparkled as she got a brilliant idea that she was sure Malia and Tristan would agree to. "I'll just go with you guys then. Thankfully Tristan can act as my shield during the dance."

Tristan looked at her weirdly in confusion. "I don't understand; are you trying to get a boyfriend or not?" Wasn't she complaining about having no one to go with to the dance?

"Oh, I do. But I'll just hide behind you until I find one." He rolled his eyes at her lame excuse as he could sense her low interest in the topic of having a boyfriend. Maybe she just doesn't want to attend a party alone?
