Chapter 9

"So the Alpha already marked his territory!" River laughed.

"W-What?" Eve frowned in confusion.

"The marks on your neck," River let out, and Eve's eyes widened as he rubbed his neck. "Seems you had a tough night."

Eve shuddered at the mere flashback of last night. River chuckled but before he could say anything he was shoved aside.

Sage gasps and scrunches up his face in horror at the red and blue marks. For a brief moment, an extreme fright crossed his face, he opened his mouth to speak but quickly shut it when he remembered River was standing behind him.

"You're surprised too, right?" River laughed, throwing his arm around Sage's shoulder, startling him. "I told you, didn't I? He's the perfect candidate to become Luna."

Luna? this again, Eve frowned, not understanding River's words at all. But he didn't let his mind wander too much on this, thinking River is a cheerful guy who likes to joke a lot.

"Who was he and why did he do that to me?" Eve asked softly, guessing he might have offended that devil in some kind of way, but he had never seen him so how could he offend someone he didn't even know?

"Luna, he's Alpha," Sage and River looked at each other before turning to face Eve. Eve sucked in his breath as River began. "And because the students wanted to get rid of him and eliminate him but were afraid to confront a killing machine like him, some of them are still bold and believe they can take his place as the ruler of this school by killing him. So, they constantly attempt to instigate things up for him in order to harm him or even kill him, but all their efforts were ineffective because they never even manage to touch a hair of him. I'm sure he must have felt that you were invading his space by being in his room and that's why he attacked you, I'm glad he didn't kill you."

Eve stuck to the floor, barely breathing, he couldn't comprehend what to say or what to think. Whether he should feel relieved that he wasn't killed last night or curse his luck for being so unlucky to be roommates with the most dangerous guy of this school. Both he thought.

"Hey, are you alright?" River shakes his arm to snap him back to reality. Eve looked at him in confusion. Huh! the irony, how could I be alright? Eve thought but nodded his head helplessly anyway.

"Hmm, then go and get ready. We'll wait for you here, after breakfast I'll take you to get your batch, okay?" River hummed, Eve looked one last time at them before disappearing into his room, closing the doors. While the two roommates wait for him.

"What, do you wanna tell him something?" River raised a playful brow at his roommate. He circled his hand around Sage's waist and brought him closer to his bulky body. "You like him now or feel bad for him, want to warn him about something impending?"

Sage glared at River, wanting to punch his wicked smirk. He grinds his teeth at the menace who only blinked innocently, making him even more irritated. River snorted when he couldn't take the cute glare, bending his head down he pecked Sage's lips who scrunched his nose pushing his idiot roommate away.

"Fuck off, I wasn't thinking of telling him anything. Stop overthinking and stay at pretending to be a fool in what you're good at," Sage exclaimed and before River could answer him Eve opened the doors with a fresh face.

Eve noticed the awkwardness between them but didn't comment on it.

"Ready to go?" River asked and Eve hummed in response, his eyes darted to Sage who was leaning against the wall with a scowl on his face, not interested in their conversation or even to be here. If it wasn't for River to force him to tag along with him he was more than happy to stay in his room.

Eve felt discouraged because he believed he was the cause of his bad mood. After all, Sage had clearly warned him to stay away from River. River rolled his eyes as he observed his sad expression and how he looked at Sage with innocent big eyes.

He ruffled his hair and laughed, "He's a little sore, nothing serious, just morning mood swings."

River assured him, before dragging him into the corridors. When the trio arrived at the cafeteria, they were stopped by a guy. Both Eve and Sage tensed up, Eve more because everything in this school was so scary and unpredictable. They shrank unconsciously behind River, who glared at the guy.

It seemed like they were having an internal conversation with their eyes and without speaking. After a moment, River nodded at the guy and turned back to the two hiding puppies.

"You guys carry on with breakfast," River smiled at them, Sage looked suspiciously at him, and River pinched his cheeks, causing him to whine. "Umm...the principal called so I need to go see him. Until then, take care of this little guy here," he said, pointing to Eve, who perked up at the mention of his name. "I understand he's taller than you, but he needs protection."

River laughed at Eve's red cheeks in embarrassment, while Sage grumbled before walking away, "So, now I'm a babysitter."

River sheepishly smiled and nodded for Eve to follow Sage while he left with the guy following behind him.

When they were settled on the table and Eve couldn't take the silence anymore he spoke.

"I'm going to bring my breakfast, should I bring yours as well?" Eve asked with a friendly smile, trying his best to start a conversation to get rid of this awkward situation between them, and maybe he could become friends with Sage as well if he tried hard.

"Why are you still pretending to be nice? River's not here anymore, relax you can quit your act in front of me," Sage let out but rolled his eyes in defeat when he saw how Eve's ears dropped and eyes teared up, sniffling quickly so that he wouldn't cry.

"You know I'm sure you're thinking that I'm asking you to stay from River because I hate you but believe me that's not the case, I'm only saying for your own benefit. You don't even know what kind of danger you are in," Sage leaned in and collapsed his hands on the table, face twisting in desperation.

Eve's eyes widened and he stuttered, "W-What are you talking about?"

"Do you really think River is helping you or looking out for you because he cares for you or pities you? No, don't fool yourself, you know him for a few hours, I have known him longer than you. He's not what he shows to others, that guy is overly obsessed with adventures and his own enjoyment. He's doing all this for his own fun. He doesn't see you as Eve, he sees you as his Luna, I'm sure you have heard this word numerous times from his mouth by now."

Eve shifted uncomfortably in his spot as Sage continued. "Now, you'll wonder what's wrong with it? It's just some random word from kids' fiction books but this word holds a really big meaning in this school. The one who'll become Luna will run this school by Alpha's side. There are always fights going on for this position but nobody ever succeeds because even if you suppress everyone, at last, you still have to fight Alpha who is undefeatable."

Eve gulped in shock and stared at Sage with wide eyes who was ranting with a worried expression. Eve was stunned beyond words.

"Why is he doing this to me? I-I don't want this position," Eve was startled and about to piss his pants off just from thinking about this.
