Chapter 30 : The Call

*Lexie’s POV*

The afternoon seems quiet, calm. Noland went to his office after lunch, and then got back in less than two hours. Now we are in the living room hanging out quietly together. Natasha and Robert on a corner, Noland sitting across from me looking at some papers, and I am reading a book.

Then I see my phone ring, and the number on the screen is a number I am not familiar with.

"Hello?" I answer hesitantly.

"Lexie? Is this Lexie Montgomery?" A stranger’s voice is on the other end of the line.

The fact that the other person does not identify themselves makes me nervous. “Yes, this is her, who is this?”

"It's your mother. She had a seizure last night. Sorry, we were only able to get your contact information now. I am nurse Gladys."

As soon as the words leave the nurse's mouth, my world crumbles around me. My mother has always been my rock, despite the emotional scars left by my abusive father. The thought of losing her too sends shivers down my spine.
