“Almost as long as you two. Anyway, long enough for Phoenix and I to get to know each other real well.”
“You must’ve sent me to Raintree for a reason,” Phoenix said. “What was it?”
“I knew it was where you could hook up with Adam.”
“But why would you do that? You knew I’d been sent to kill him.”
“By that time, I knew you well enough to know you weren’t a killer.” She looked up at Adam. “And look at Adam. Have you ever seen a more docile fallen angel?” She snickered. “The man’s a pussycat.”
“Hey! I don’t think I like that!”
“Cool it, pussy cat. It’s a compliment, for God’s sake.”
“How much do you know about us?” Phoenix asked.
“A lot. And if I know a lot, whoever Satan sends after you is going to know even more. You’ve got to hide.”
“Will they pass through the vortex?” Adam asked.
“Yeah, I guess so. Why?”
“I’ve been thinking. If they pass through it, they’ll change just like we did. Isn’t there a chance they might become…well…a pussycat like me?”
