Chapter 52

Jason had yet to move. “Which hand?”

“This one.” Colby waved the freed appendage in question. “Gently. Maybe talk to me?”

“Got it.” Jason leaned over and collected Colby’s hand into both of his large ones: holding it like a rare flower, a porcelain eggshell, a drop of delicate sugar-art. “The restaurant here’s supposed to be awesome at desserts. There’s a sort of sticky toffee pudding thing with ginger I thought you’d like. And like ten kinds of local sheep’s milk cheese. I know you like cheese.”

“I do like cheese quite a lot.”

“We could get dressed again and go find some more carved sheep, later. Or tomorrow, if you want to stay in tonight. I can order room service and feed you. Might do that anyway.”

“Cheese and pudding and you and this bed. Add a book and a cup of coffee and you’ll have found my idea of heaven. I think I’m all right, actually, now.”
