Chapter Fifty-Two

Jim wanted to be sick, but he didn't have time. The bodies were laid out in the snow, in bags now. Twenty-four people dead or injured, because the military didn't let him arrest that woman. The two Captains were subdued and deferring to Jim around every decision. Now they could go home, the people refused. They stayed to mourn their dead. Some silently and some with wails and tears.

Leigh's car pulled up, and Alastair, Georgia and Lyanne piled out of it. They walked toward him and he could see the urgency in spite of the slow pace. Georgia was in bare feet.

"Wait a minute, Sergeant Creeley." Jim ran over to the three. For some reason both Lyanne and Alastair were holding Georgia's hands. She looked like she'd been beaten. Her face was swollen and her nose might be broken.
