Fate is unreal

Normally, to my experience, whenever a person was close to dying, memories of their past would always flash in their eyes. The situation was quite different in my case. The only thing in my mind was how the vampire's fangs would pierce my neck, or face, depending on his preference. If I would be numb and feel nothing or experience every bit and ounce of the practice. However, deep down, I felt like this wasn't going to be my death, just a near death one.

In what seemed like forever to me and let's say a second in real time, a woman intervened.

"Stop" it was firm and full of resolution

I slowly opened my eyes

"Miss Angela" the guard acknowledged respectfully

"Step away from him this instant" she ordered. The guard humbly obliged, head bowed down in reverence

"If I ever see you, or any one near him, I'm gonna rip bones out of your body and use them to stab you. Am I clear?"

"Yes miss"

"Now scram" she snapped

I'll have to admit that I was a bit impressed with the way the guard took the threat seriously. It almost seemed like he believed it since he walked away quickly without a word of protest. It served to make me re-think Angela's rank among the vampires.

"You have to possess some really big balls to come here at this time of the night, are you out of your mind or something?" she turned to me and scolded

"We need to talk" I said straightforwardly "it's urgent"

"Well, now is not a perfect time. Come tomorrow"

"I'll be quick about it. I just need you to do something for me"

She regarded me thoughtfully for a couple of seconds before sighing. Grabbing my arm, she led me to her car, locked its doors and windows before turning up the radio

"Two minutes" she said

"You don't want them to hear us, smart "I mumbled

"I need you to unclaim me" I said after taking a heavy breath

As if I had just mentioned a profanity, Angela's eyes widened in shock. She leaned back on her seat and scanned me from top to bottom, hands crossed in front of her breast.

"Am I not beautiful?"

"What? Is that what this is about?" I frowned in puzzlement

"No" she chuckled "of course not, it was just a joke"

"Why do you need me to unclaim you? Without a claim you remain vulnerable to attack by vampires and other species"

"I am not anyone's property" I mentioned "and I don't want to be chained to a person, it's degrading"

"I'm sorry but I can't do that" she sighed

"Why?"

"It's for your own protection"

" I'm not dumb" I chuckled " we don't know each other that much, no way you could be this worried about my well-being"

"..."

"Don't say anything about mates or being fated" I interjected

"If vampires exist, why wouldn't you believe in fate?"

"We are fated?" I widened my eyes

"No" she laughed

"Doesn't that mean that I have to get married to you or something then stay loyal for the rest of my life?"

"Doesn't sound like a bad thing…but it's not that" she placed her hand on top of mine "I know who you are John Steward"

"I highly doubt that" I sighed

"Ethan Blaze" she mentioned with a smile "you may have fooled the werewolves about your real identity but I can tell when someone lies"

"Hold up" I pulled back on my seat "Werewolves?"

"Yeah" she replied casually "they reside by the forest"

"Are you being serious right now?"

"You should be asking why I know your real name" Angela smiled "the werewolves don't really matter in this moment"

"That's the least of my worries, and I guessed Hannah told you" I shrugged

"No she didn't, and you may not know this but you are a really important human"

"I'm confused"

"Unless you agree to remain claimed, I'm not allowed to reveal further sensitive information to you" she added

I chuckled

"I'm afraid you can't use my curiosity against me. I already made up my mind"

Angela took a heavy sigh and withdrew her hand from mine. She blanked out staring at the tinted rear window for some seconds before turning to me

"I know what really happened to your family" she said

And in that moment, energy instantly drenched from my form. I felt a rush of sorrow and sadness overwhelm my heart the same way a drench would get filled up by water. Her simple sentence had just dragged my heart and mind back to the gloomy dark past I was so intent on forgetting.

"I know, wild animals mauled them to death" I said lowly

"That was the sheriff's version, the story everyone was told" Angela said insightfully, sorrow visible in her eyes "but it wasn't necessarily the case"

"What happened to them?" curiosity finally got the better of me

"You would have to remain…"

Angela was cut mid-sentence by a sudden knock on the window. She heaved irritably as she roughly pushed the door open, breaking its locks unminding of it's worth.

"What?" I heard her re-join

"Your absence has been noticed" the other voice responded rather gleefully, I recognized it as Ramon's

"I'll be there shortly" Angela replied

"No can do, I've been instructed to go back with you"

"Okay"

"Bring him too" Ramon said, his statement almost drawing my heart to a stop

"The human, Ethan Blaze, I've mentioned to the head that he's here too"

"Why do you have to be such a prick?" I heard Angela complain

"Don't even think about it, "Ramon's voice was dead serious "I don't want to fight you"

After listening to them bicker and argue for close to a minute, I left the vehicle, my mind fed up with being treated like an object.

"Shall we?" I asked

"What are you doing Ethan?" Angela turned face me

"He's co-operating which you should also be doing by the way"

Angela strode towards me then looked me in the eyes. She stood so close to me that I could smell her strawberry-scented perfume. I could tell from the way Ramon was glaring at me that he wasn't appreciating how close she stood. Not mentioning that they used to date. If gazes cold kill then I would be dead a thousand times over.

"Don't speak unless you are asked a question. And don't lie"

"That's a very specific rule" I laughed

"Yeah, people have been killed for that"
