Chapter 18

Chapter 18

When Anastasia opened her eyes again, it was dark. This time, she was feeling extremely weak. The drip was still on, and she knew that any moment from now, she was going to die.

The man came up to check on her, and Anastasia couldn't even say a word. She was very weak. She turned her head and locked eyes with the mermaid in the glass tube. The mermaid's scales were peeling off, and she looked so pale that she was turning blue.

When the man brought a syringe near her neck, her eyes widened. "What are you doing?" She asked. "No... No... Please..." She shook her head. Before the syringe could penetrate into her skin, she screamed.

This time, the man staggered backward, the syringe falling from his hand, and he gazed at her intently. She continued to scream, not stopping. The man brought his hands to cover his ears, but that didn't stop her scream from piercing in. "W... what is going on?" He asked.

Anastasia, who was feeling all weak and drained, felt a sudden power wash through her. She tried to stop herself from screaming, as she knew that the man might find out about her identity. Her face was turning bluish, with scales forming on her skin.

As the man fell on his knees, Lucas rushed in, grabbing her neck, and she suddenly felt quiet. He continued to strangle her, and she was slowly giving up.

When she thought she would die any moment from now, the door suddenly burst open, and she saw Cassius walk in. Anastasia didn't know why, but she felt relief flood in. She suddenly felt safe.

Cassius, with rage boiling through him, grabbed Lucas from the ground and threw him across the wall. Lucas was quick to get himself back on his feet and went after Cassius. But he was not strong enough to pull Cassius down. Cassius grabbed his neck, pinning him to the wall. "Trying to hurt her... Uhh?" He asked. "You think that would make you the next King?"

"At least that would stop you from becoming the next King of Blackwood Kingdom," Lucas sneered. "I hate you, Cassius," he said back. "I should be the next King of this Kingdom, not you. I'm the one who's been loyal to father, who worked to make this Kingdom what it is today, and now you would be the next King? No!"

"She would be dead soon, and I would gain the trust of the Elders! They would think I am the right one for the throne," Lucas spat.

"You'll never sit on that throne," Cassius whispered in a cold, unforgiving voice. In the blink of an eye, he plunged his hand into Lucas's chest and pulled out his heart. Lucas choked on his blood before falling to the ground. Cassius stared at the black heart before throwing it on Lucas's corpse.

Turning around to face Anastasia, he didn't see her. She was gone. The glass tube was open, and it looked like the mermaid inside was also gone.

Instantly, Cassius turned worried that the mermaid in the tube had taken Anastasia away to harm her. Where was she? Cassius didn't know what to think at the moment, as he somehow felt afraid that the mermaid had harmed Anastasia.

He swore to kill the mermaid if something happened to Ana. Then he thought about the fact that she had killed his father, and the people would want to kill her too if they saw her. He had sworn to take her life himself, and now he was afraid someone else would kill her.

As he continued to walk, he saw the sky darken and the evening breeze slam against his skin. He searched for her, trying to find her scent, but it scattered through the air. Her scent was not leading him in any particular direction.

Suddenly, the rain started falling, and his clothes were soaked. When he couldn't find her after about half an hour, he blamed himself for not saving her earlier.

But why was he feeling this way? Shouldn't he be at least happy that she would soon die, and there would be no more distractions when he becomes the King?

But no, Cassius wanted to take her life himself, not someone else. She had to be somewhere around. He could still feel her; she was not dead yet. But she felt anxious. Anxious about what? Was she running from the mermaid? He sniffed in again, but the wind had scattered her scent everywhere.

After two hours of searching the surroundings for Anastasia, he came across a cottage house. Her scent felt strong around the cottage, and he decided to go in. When he went inside, he saw Anastasia lying on the ground, surrounded by her blood. She was bleeding profusely. But that wasn't the only thing Cassius noticed. He also saw that there were scales on part of her body. What happened?
