Alex guided Eldwin toward the portal that led to the new map, The Veil of Night. As he approached, the screen filled with a throng of players converging on the portal.

Through his screen, Alex saw hundreds of avatars, all bustling with excitement. But as Eldwin reached the portal spot, something unexpected happened. The crowd parted, and all eyes turned to him. The multiplayer chat buzzed with excitement and curiosity.

Rubinogin: "Alas, I'm sure he'll be the one to find the Grand Item. I mean, he's Eldwin we're talking about—the number one ranked player in Shadowbound Online."

Alex, used to the attention, moved through the portal, and the screen turned black.

Seeing nothing on the screen, Alex was about to check his PC, but then it brightened up, and a loading sign popped up: "The Veil of Night map is loading."

When the loading ended, Alex's character stood in a vast forest shrouded in darkness. Clicking his mouse's left button, he opened the inventory and turned on a magically enchanted lamp. This lamp not only illuminated his surroundings but also highlighted nearby hostile creatures in a red hue.

As soon as the lamp was on, he saw he was surrounded by an unknown type of creature, causing his eyebrows to rise in question. Was this monster a new addition to the game?

The creature resembled a chimera but wasn't exactly one. It had no head except for a dragon's head, but even the dragon head looked strange.

Whatever.

Alex equipped his weapons, enchanted himself with blessings, and took a fighting stance, ready to charge.

Ten of these strange chimeras lunged at him simultaneously. Activating his acceleration skill, Alex dodged their deadly attacks, then charged at the bewildered chimeras from behind, slashing through them with ease.

Making a high jump, he created distance from the last remaining chimera. Opening his inventory, he drank a healing potion, refilling his HP to max. If there was anything Alex hated, it was battling recklessly.

The last chimera was different from the others; it was bigger and oozed dark energy.

Alex unequipped his sword and equipped a long wand—a rare drop from an event. The Wand of Asteria, a Tier 7 weapon capable of dealing significant damage to the enemy.

Seeing Alex equip the wand, the chimera freaked out and charged, throwing big rocks at him.

The chimera, just an inch away from Alex, suddenly saw him disappear and couldn't stop, crashing into a big tree.

Alex reappeared behind it, readying a spell.

A red portal emerged in the thin air, and from it, a red light beam shot toward the chimera. As soon as it made contact, the chimera took massive damage and was vaporized.

Alex clicked the map icon, trying to open the map, but a notification popped up on the screen.

Strange. How am I supposed to locate the dungeons then? I heard this is one of the biggest maps the developers have created.

While thinking this, Alex moved stealthily through the forest. Though he expected to encounter more dangerous monsters like the chimeras, he only fought a bunch of weak dark goblins and shadow monsters. After a fifteen-minute walk that felt like an eternity, he finally got out of the forest.

He hoped to see settlements or ruins, but instead, he saw a vast, enormous field under a thundering sky.

What the hell is wrong with the developers? How am I supposed to play on this map if I don't know which direction I'm going? Alex cursed in frustration.

Alex stood from his chair, letting the game stay on. He headed downstairs and opened the fridge, gulping down an entire bottle of water. Feeling refreshed, he quickly returned to his room, plopping back into his chair. As he glanced at his desktop screen, he saw something strange.

 

In the middle of the vast field, a faint glow caught his eye. Though it was far away, the hue was unmistakable.

"Maybe it's some kind of drop? Well, if it is, I can't waste my time. I need to grab it before anyone else sees it," he muttered, his heart racing with excitement.

He sprinted toward the source of the light, his character, Eldwin, moving swiftly across the digital landscape.

When he reached the light, he saw something unexpected—a small, shimmering portal. Alex looked around, checking if anyone else was nearby. The field was empty, the eerie silence broken only by the distant rumble of the thunderous sky.

"Maybe it leads to a dungeon or a hidden boss," he pondered. "Well, I won't know if I don't enter it."

With cold resolve, Alex readied himself and jumped through the portal. Once again, the screen went black.

"Again? But why—"

"Eeeek!"

A sharp, excruciating pain shot through Alex's neck. He felt an invisible force choking him. Panic surged as he looked down, seeing nothing on his neck but feeling the relentless pressure. Desperately, he tried to turn and look behind him.

"DON'T L-O-O-K B-A-C-K."

That was the last thing Alex heard before everything went dark, and he lost consciousness.
