The sky was still pitch black, with no sign of the sun rising from the horizon. In the entire city of Vanceburg, security measures suddenly tightened as police cars patrolled the streets checking out from house to house while asking them a few questions.
Meanwhile, in an alleyway, a young teenage boy lay face down on the floor, with small bones scattered around him and a pool of dry blood. A ding reverberated in his mind as he slowly woke up.
"What... happened?" Devon thought as he looked around. For a moment, he couldn't register what had happened, but then memories flooded his mind, making a bit more sense.
"I was shot at," Devon thought. He quickly pulled up his shirt to examine his side. The bullet hadn't pierced his flesh, but it had grazed him, causing significant damage and reducing his health points by 20%.
Looking at the spot where he had been injured, Devon couldn't find any sign of the wound.
"Did I heal from it?"
[HP - 70/100]
"My HP increased... But did I eat anything?" Devon remembered passing out with a message flashing the low number of health points he had left.
The sudden increase in his health points didn't make sense to Devon, but he didn't dwell on it for long. He soon heard a squeaking cry from the side. Turning around, he found a white fur mouse staring at him and sniffing the air.
Devon didn't know why, but he felt his body moving on its own. His hand grabbed the mouse and he shoved it into his mouth without hesitation.
When he realized what he had done, Devon wanted to spit the mouse out, but he found himself chewing on it. The worst part was that he didn't feel any disgust; instead, he tasted a strange, sweet flavor as he chewed.
[A street mouse has been killed and eaten. No stat gained]
[HP - 80/100]
The sweet taste disappeared, and Devon was able to spit out the bones.
"Is this what happened... Was I busy eating rats all over the street?"
Devon had come to accept the fact that he was a werewolf and his body had changed, but there were still a few things he was unwilling to accept. The idea of feeding on raw flesh didn't sit well with him, and he wondered if he could find another way.
Name: Devon Matt
Age: 16
Race: Werewolf
Class: Unknown
Title: Shadow
Level: 3
HP: 80/100
Exp: 25/400
Energy: 20
Strength: 5
Dexterity: 7
Endurance: 5
Stat points - 4
Not much had changed in his status, except for his energy, which was still recovering. His dexterity had increased by two points, and he still had four unused stat points. Devon was saving them for a dire situation, like the one he had just experienced.
"Heck... I still have the reward from the system. Perhaps I should check it out now," Devon thought.
Just then, a police car swerved across the road, its tires skidding. Devon quickly crouched behind a bin.
"Shit... I must not let them see me, or I'm doomed for sure," Devon thought, starting to panic.
Two police officers stepped out of the car and looked around. It was clear they had come to either set up a temporary checkpoint or search for something.
Devon didn't want to be spotted and needed a plan. Just then, he heard another squeaking sound, and another mouse appeared.
'Shee.e.eee!' Devon gestured, but it was of no use. The policemen had heard the sound, but one of them dismissed it as just a mouse.
"Come on... don't be silly. That's just a mouse, nothing special," the other policeman called out, leaning against the car trunk and lighting a cigarette.
The other policeman took a last glance at the alley before joining his partner and lighting his own cigarette.
The two officers got lost in conversation, talking about work. Devon sighed in relief, but he knew it wouldn't last. The officers were sitting on the trunk of their car, indicating they would stay there for a while, possibly until dawn. Devon couldn't wait that long; he needed a plan.
He quickly finished off the mouse in his mouth and started thinking. His health bar was back to full, which was good news, but that wasn't all.
[Energy - 40/50]
Devon wasn't sure if his instincts were correct, but he found another mouse and picked it up.
No matter how unwilling he was, when push came to shove, he couldn't resist. He couldn't control himself. Although the natural urge had subsided since his health was back to normal, Devon wanted to test something.
He chewed on the mouse, and the system message appeared.
[Energy - 50/50]
Devon already had a plan in mind.
More rats rushed out, and Devon, though filled, continued to catch them.
"Perhaps I can use you guys as sparring food at any time," Devon thought.
He remembered something the system had said. If he wanted to increase his energy percentage, he needed to hunt down prey and eat them.
"I wonder how much percentage increase a street rat could give me," Devon wondered.
In the end, Devon was interested in finding out. He shoved one of the rats into his mouth and chewed.
[Energy: 50 >>> 55]
"A five percent increase... Not bad for little things like you," Devon thought. He continued to eat the rats, increasing his energy bar. Before he knew it, he had killed them all.
[Energy: 75/75]
"I don't want to create another shadow wolf yet. I need to study the behavior of one before creating more," Devon concluded.
Creating a shadow wolf required fifty percent of Devon's energy, and at the moment, he only had enough to create one. He didn't want to create more until he understood the shadow wolf and its purpose.
At that moment, however, he had created his shadow wolf. The large, dark figure, the size of a car, rose from the ground and locked eyes with Devon.
"Your command is simple. Provide a distraction for the police," Devon commanded.
