Chapter 56: Who said life was fair?

“Nell. Hey, Nell.”

I pushed back against the finger that was poking into my shoulder. “No. Not yet. Sleep. So tired.”

“Nell. C’mon, wake up. Please.”

It was the please and the urgent tone that finally drilled through my sleepy haze. I blinked up into Rafe’s dark eyes, and I was instantly awake.

“What? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

He nodded, his head scratching against the pillow. “I think so. But I need to use the bathroom, and I can’t get my legs to move. I’m sorry to wake you up, but can you help?”

I pushed myself to a sitting position and ran a hand over my hair. “Yeah, hold on just a second.” I swung my legs over the side of the bed and glanced out to the living room. It was filled with bright sunshine, which told me we’d both slept away most of the morning. That was a good thing, probably. We needed it.
