Chapter 31

Anita came in with a couple of guys who looked like they were set up for SWAT.

"What did you think you were doing?" she said. "You should have called me and waited for us."

"Do you know what they were going to do to Marilyn?" I said as I let the police take Marilyn out of the locker room. "I wasn't going to let them hurt Marilyn the same way they hurt me."

"I understand," she said, "but you put yourself in danger. Your threat about the video was clever, but you saw that it wasn't enough to stop him. A few minutes later and this would be a murder scene."

I opened my mouth to argue, but she was right. Now that the adrenaline had worn off I started shaking. I thought of how close that knife had come to my face. I felt Anita enfolding me in another cop hug.

"I need your phone," Anita said. "I'll give it back to you when I have the video."

"I'll send you the video," I said. Anita lifted her eyebrows. "You wouldn't believe what you can do with these phones."
