Escaped

I could hear the chaos above me, the sounds of the battle echoing through the metallic corridors of the facility. It was all falling apart faster than I had anticipated. My hands trembled as I keyed in the final sequence on the control panel, activating the emergency escape pod. I could feel my pulse pounding in my ears as the screen blinked in acknowledgment. The countdown had begun. Ten seconds to launch.

The pod's hatch hissed open behind me. There wasn't time for second thoughts or regrets, not after everything I'd done. Not after everything they were doing. I cast a final glance around the control room, the walls lined with readouts and surveillance screens showing the chaos outside. The Coalition forces were losing, that much was clear. They hadn't anticipated the full brunt of the attack. It was their own fault for underestimating the opposition.
