Chapter 48: Finally…. The Rune of Tranquility (Finale)

"I was trying to calm myself, but the feeling of memories slowly being erased from my soul haunted me, making it practically impossible to concentrate.

Just the time taken to calm down made me forget the time before the awakening ceremony when I used to be happy, surrounded by others in the orphanage. This piece of memory was filled with happiness but wasn't the fondest one, so I wasn't disturbed the same way as when I forgot the two people from my dream.

Slowly, even the memories of my time in the orphanage disintegrated into nothingness. Although I was aware of it, I gave my all to control the emotions rather than getting affected by it, slowly starting to imbue the meaning into my runic symbol.

The process was strenuous, with me forgetting even the memories that I had no inkling of. I had even forgotten about my own parents, which were subconsciously stored within my soul. It was another thing that shook my psyche, as I had the chance to know about my real parents if I had been able to strengthen my soul in the future.

"Was I that bad of a child for them to leave me alone?" It was the question I wanted the answer to. But now, even that little hope that I had was destroyed by the power that I was given by my legacy.

The time taken to imbue the meaning was the shortest of all when comparing it with every rune inscribed into my being, but the time I took to calm myself was the longest, as this rune directly affected my psyche, making me forget the happiest and fondest memories I had been able to live with till now.

I was able to have the rune etched on my soul, but at what cost?

The cost was something I was not ready for. It was way more for somebody like me who only had two or three fondest memories that I wanted to cherish forever, until my death."

I lacked the ability to even read the description of the rune presented to me. My mind wasn't in the right place to admire the wonderful rune I had inscribed into my soul, as the cost was too steep, not something I could pay for such a rune.

The frightening aspect of this rune was that I couldn't even lash out for having my memories taken away from me, as it suppressed my emotions of anger and pain. My mind was in chaos; I wanted to vent my frustration and anger, but the rune suppressed the emotion before it could manifest itself.

My face remained calm without any change, but my heart was not calm. It beat haphazardly, threatening to break the cage of bones and flesh. I literally shook due to the fluctuating emotions, as if somebody had destroyed the controller that had managed my emotions until now.

I would become angry for a second before the anger got suppressed by my rune. This process of having my anger and frustration suppressed continued for almost an hour before I finally quelled the bubbling anger within me.

This message arrived at the perfect time, causing my controlled emotions to once again become chaotic. It felt like the legacy was mocking me for destroying my fondest memories due to impatience.

The notifications kept coming, but I wasn't in the proper condition to even look at the messages flashing on my retina, as I was once again tormented by conflicting emotions affecting my psyche.

Arghhhh…

As the emotions conflicted within me, my brain felt like it was going to explode at any given moment due to the pressure it was forced to handle. The uncontrolled emotions were slowly ravaging me, destroying my sanity as time passed by.

I was nearly on the verge of going berserk before the legacy once again came to my rescue, causing me to fall unconscious in the training room.

I woke up after a long slumber.

My head still hurt, but it had lessened significantly. I looked around, trying to remember the situation inside this room before being forcefully thrown into the state of unconsciousness by the legacy.

The feeling of emptiness lingered, yet I had no inkling as to its cause. I attempted to recall the reason for this emptiness several times, but nothing came to mind. It was as if someone had forcefully erased any memories after I entered the training room to inscribe the "Rune of Tranquility" into my being.

"What happened?" I questioned aloud.

[Host was in a precarious situation.]

"What precarious situation?" The words escaped my mouth as soon as the legacy's message flashed on my retina.

[Your emotions were overloading the fragile soul.]

"Are you saying my memories were removed because of my emotions?" It seemed somewhat absurd that different emotions could trigger such a response from the legacy.

[Affirmative]

"And what about the several missing memories I have no recollection of?"

The legacy's response was not reassuring. Despite my repeated attempts to inquire further about my missing memories, it remained unyielding.

Frustrated, I halted my inquiries. However, an interesting revelation emerged during my questioning: only the fondest and happiest memories were erased. Other memories I wished to forget remained intact. This led me to the conclusion that the " Rune of Tranquility" had freaked me up. 

Even Legacy accepted the fact that everything that had happened inside the training room, the reason my memories were erased, was the result of the rune that I had tried inscribing in the spur of a moment today.

"I paid a heavy price for such decisions."

Now what?

"Did I succeed in the inscription process?" I had to go with the flow.

[Affirmative]

The legacy then proceeded to show me all the notifications I had missed while unconscious.

The first notification was the description of the rune, and it matched my vision perfectly. I could already sense its effects on me—I was calm, almost eerily so, even after losing something significant. Any negative emotions were swiftly suppressed before they could take hold, to the point where even the mere thought of such emotions was quelled.

"The rune was frightening." And, I had no other option than to bear with it.

After that were the notifications I missed while being unconscious.

[Being the first-ever 'Spiritual rune' created by the host. The rank of the rune had been upgraded to "Uncommon" rank.]

[ The soul of the host has been strengthened.]

[ Hosts control over his soul has been slightly enhanced.]

[ The seal on the legacy has been slightly liberated]

[ The effect of the runes inscribed into the host has been slightly enhanced]

[ Host can now master the runes slightly faster]

[ The host's control over his ' Heart of rune' and ' Body of rune' has been slightly enhanced, increasing their effects on the host]

[ The resonance between the two legacy treasures has been slightly increased increasing the effect of the runes inscribed into the host]

The notifications presented to me were somewhat blinding as they had several rewards just for being able to inscribe a ' Common' ranked rune into my soul.

Although the rune was ' Uncommon' rank now thanks to the legacy, I was genuinely surprised as it directly increased the rank of my 'soul' by a minor rank, making it reach [F+] rank. The increase in rank might feel somewhat meager but the way it affected my entire being was proven by the later notifications that told me about the effect of such a tiny improvement in my soul.
