The morning light had already brightened the sky.
Summer and Logan sat face to face in the kitchen, eating breakfast.
Summer ate her bread slowly, chewing as her gaze occasionally flitted to Logan.
After swallowing a bite, she smiled and asked, "Do I look different today?"
Hearing this, Logan looked at her. His gaze lingered on Summer's face for a moment before he replied, "Yes."
Today, something had changed?
Summer's eyes sparkled with anticipation as she eagerly asked, "What's different?"
Logan said, "Your skin has gotten thicker."
Summer: "..."
Her anticipation faded, and she stopped smiling, pouting slightly and not pursuing the matter further.
In the past few days, she had indeed grown a bit bolder each day.
This was all because she was worried that after returning to the city, she might not see him again, making it even harder to gain his energy, or possibly never getting it again.
But this wasn't something that could be rushed.
So now Summer's mindset was relatively calm, thinking—do your best and let fate decide.
She certainly didn't share this with Logan.
After taking a few more bites of bread, she brazenly brought up the topic of the city return quota again.
She looked at Logan and said, "It's been four or five days since we heard about the city return quota in the team, and it hasn't been assigned to specific individuals yet. Do you think there might be any unexpected changes?"
Logan looked at her and asked, "What kind of unexpected changes?"
Summer pondered and said, "Of course, the quota might go to someone else instead of us."
Logan replied, "Among the ten of them, who is more qualified than us to get those two quotas?"
Summer also believed that none of the ten were qualified, and in the novel, the quota had gone to her and Logan, which she then gave to Sophia for Henry.
Seeing Summer stay silent, Logan asked more directly, "Who are you worried about?"
Summer bit her lip slightly and answered honestly, "Henry and Sophia."
Originally, she hadn't been worried at all.
But after these few days, she couldn't help but feel a bit uneasy. After all, Henry had the protagonist's aura, and she was worried that she couldn't escape the novel's plot.
Logan didn't seem worried and simply said, "Those two are the least qualified to get the quota. If they manage to get it through some means, I will make sure they can't go back."
Summer stared at Logan for a moment.
Then she suddenly leaned closer and asked in a low voice, "Do you have something on them..."
She made a gesture with her thumbs, hooking them together, "like evidence?"
Logan didn't answer.
Summer laughed and said, "Can you give it to me too?"
Logan replied, "I have it, so what do you need it for?"
Summer said, "Of course, to secure the quota. If you get it and I don't, will you stand up for me?"
Although she knew that the college entrance examination would soon resume, and even if she couldn't go back this time, she could still return by getting into college, she still wanted to go back this time.
After all, she didn't know if she could get into college.
If she couldn't, who knows how long she'd have to stay in the countryside.
Even from the perspective of preparing for college, it would be better to go back to the city. There would be more resources, study materials, and a higher chance of getting into college.
Logan listened to her and stayed silent for a while.
He didn't mention the evidence but said, "Let's see."
Seeing that he didn't want to talk about it, Summer didn't press further.
They went to school and attended classes. Summer temporarily set aside her thoughts about the quota.
Even though she hoped to return to the city this time, she still had to do her current job well. She couldn't slack off just because of the return. She had to be responsible for her students.
After half a day of classes.
Because the kitchen's water tank was empty, after school, Logan dutifully went to the community's yard to fetch water, and Summer still followed.
They went to the yard and pumped water.
After filling two buckets and preparing to carry them back, they suddenly heard Leonardo's voice from the committee office, "Logan, Summer, just in time, come over here."
Summer and Logan turned to see Leonardo standing outside the committee office.
They put down the yoke and walked to the office together.
Inside the office.
Logan asked first, "Captain Leonardo, what do you need from us?"
Leonardo was already seated behind his desk.
He smiled at Summer and Logan and said, "It's good news. You've probably heard that our community got two city return quotas, right?"
Hearing the word 'city return quota,' Summer's nerves tightened.
Her expression also tensed up, and she nodded with Logan, "Yes, we heard."
Leonardo smiled and continued, "Then I won't beat around the bush. After the quotas were announced, we had several discussions, and this morning we had an official meeting and vote. The result was as expected, it's you two."
He handed two application forms to Summer and Logan, "Fill these out accurately and return them to me this afternoon. I need to go to the council tomorrow and will submit them for you."
Logan's feelings were hard to read, but Summer's heart was pounding with excitement. She managed to keep her composure, staying tense.
Logan didn't take the forms immediately, and neither did Summer.
Logan said, "Captain Leonardo, if we leave, what about the children at school?"
Summer knew he was thorough in everything he did.
She also said, "Yes, Captain Leonardo, if we leave, there will be no teachers for the school."
She knew that this wasn't really a problem.
Leonardo replied as expected, "Don't worry about that. Anthony's nephew just graduated high school last year. If you leave, he'll take over the school. Besides, there are ten other volunteers."
Logan finally took the application forms, sighing heavily, "We recruited these children into the school with great effort, hoping to teach them until middle school. I didn't expect to leave after only two years. It's hard to let them go."
Summer wasn't sure how much of Logan's words were true, but she genuinely felt a bit reluctant to leave the children after spending so much time with them.
But she also really wanted to go home.
She took the application form, echoing, "I feel the same."
Leonardo continued, "Well, fill these out and return them this afternoon. I'll take care of the rest."
They nodded and left the office, heading back to fetch the water they had abandoned earlier.
On their way back, Summer couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about the future.
