The beginning?

Kelvin laid on the floor, zombies around him biting into his warm body. His consciousness fading from his body, the feeling of pain leaving him.

How had things gotten like this? It's been a week since the 'Transcendence' had happened, mana flooded the world and mutated everything. Including humans.

Those who failed to adapt became monsters, some undead some beast but all mindless. The ones that did gained abilities known only in fiction.

Pyrokinesis, telekinesis, metal bodies, soft bones and many others. Everyone gained seemingly unique abilities, all except Kelvin.

At first Kelvin didn't know about the abilities, he lived alone and rarely interacted with others outside work. Only after the news made it onto the internet did he learn of it, two days had passed by then.

Kelvin realized he had no abilities after a day of trying. Still he was optimistic, maybe it had a requirement of killing a zombie?

However not even that gave him an ability, worse still the zombie called a group onto him. Unable to run Kelvin gets overwhelmed by the group and is eaten.

............

'Where... where am I?!'

Kelvin suddenly came awake, but instead of what he last saw on his dying breath now he was in a very different place.

Kelvin looked around, he was in an environment of white with countless gray wisps floating around.

'The hell? Is this the afterlife?'

[Close.]

'WHAT WHO WAS THAT?!'

[Calm down mortal. You can think of my as a divine entity and where you are is Limbo, the place where souls who believe in no gods rest.]

'What? Ok... Ok...' Kelvin quickly calmed himself.

'So gods are real? Then what happens to the souls here? Do they stay here forever and don't reincarnate?'

[Yes we are real. As for the souls here, they are resting. The souls have to be completely pure to move on to their next life, in Limbo the purification is done by waiting for it to expel the impurities on its own.]

'Wouldn't that take a long time?'

[Well, yes. But it is the price for Limbo, if they had believed in other religions their afterlife would be different. Limbo imposes no punishments and no reward. If you believed in Buddhism then you would go through hell before entering the wheel of reincarnation.]

'I see... but why are you telling me this? Hell why am I still conscious are all the souls like this too?'

[Why am I telling you this? Well child, you are special. Very special.]

A reflective screen appeared in front of Kelvin as the entity said that. Kelvin saw the wisp reflected, but it was different. Instead of a plain gray wisp it was a very very, almost unnoticeable, pale gold.

[Can you see it? Your soul is a different color. Transcendence has mutated not your physical body but your soul, it is the reason why you had no abilities.]

'Yeah but... how am I suppose to feel excited with this it.. I can't even use it, whatever abilities it has I'm dead!'

The entity laughed in Kelvin's head for a bit before it continued.

[Are you perhaps thinking that I am entertaining you just because I am bored?! No. You, mortal, have a very special soul. You can retain your memories when you go through reincarnation.]

[Mortal. You have in a way, immortality.]

'What?! Then... but...' Kelvin was dazed for a while almost getting excited but quickly calmed himself thinking of his current situation.

'Okay, I can remember my past lives from now on then what? Won't I need to purify my soul to reincarnate?'

Another short laugh.

[No, you don't. In fact you could reincarnate right this instant, you simply have to will it. But lets not cut this conversation short. The reason why I am answering your questions is a few things, first is to check you as a person. Know this, you have what is quite possibly the easiest path to godhood.]

'W-what?!'

[Yes, godhood. You have the highest chance of all that is not divine to become a god.]

'How.. how do I become a god?'

[That is a question you can only answer for yourself. Godhood is personal, maybe one day your soul will tell you when you are strong enough. Enough of that, the second reason is because I am quite bored, this Transcendence has killed so many and I am just flooded with work.]

'So you are a good presiding over death?'

[No. I am a god presiding over Hell. Which one I won't say but my duties include documenting the souls and sending them off for punishment.]

[Your soul simply caught my eye when you traversed the space between Limbo and the Material realm. Anyways I don't have much to say to you anymore, go on and reincarnate. The next time you die, just call me... H. Yes call me H when you enter Limbo or whatever hell you end up in.]

'Wait wait wait! How do I enter reincarnation? I don't know how!'

[Argh, it should be instinctive to you. Like a muscle you could never flex. I said this already, it requires your willingness to activate. See you.]

The screen disappeared and Kelvin looked around Limbo. With a little effort Kelvin discovered he could float around, there was no floor and it seemed that he was just flying. The wisps varied in darkness, some more gray than others.

Kelvin found nothing to do in Limbo so he eventually tried to activate his ability.
