Chapter 63

"Can I view my current stats?" Vorbuk asked god's voice as he sat outside in an alleyway. Moonlight shone down on his dark grey fur illuminating his wolf figure under the night sky.

[ Name: Vorbuk

Species: Shadow Wolf

Evolution Level: 2

Mana: 900

Titles: Goblin Slayer, Protector of the Realm, Bar Brawler, ]

"Seriously? Did you need to give me that last one? Does Bredret have that one too because I could see him deserving that title.." Vorbuk felt if he tried to understand the common sense behind the voice in his head that spoke to him he would probably die from the headache alone it gave him.

[ Invalid. ]

"Of course it is!" Vorbuk's muzzle let out of deep huff from his frustration at how little information god's voice liked to give him. Thinking to himself for a moment he paused before he continued to speak with god's voice. "What is my requirement for the next evolution?"

[ In order for next evolution to take place safely mana must reach 1000. Forcing for an early evolution at any point in time can risk a dangerous backlash. ]

"I could force an early evolution?" Vorbuk repeated those words to himself but got rid of the very idea due to the warning god's voice gave him. He had the time for now to find a way to evolve himself further so he would find a way.

[ Mission Alert: Capture The Target

Details: Locate target, Chete, and convince them to aid in the war.

Reward: The Heart of Luna ]

Vorbuk listened to the new task that the voice was entrusting him to take care of. Wondering why it was requesting him to do something he was already working on with his group he thought about asking it further questions. If the voice was mentioning to find the man it made him feel as if Chete must have become aware that they were in Cista in search for him. The last time that he had been given a mission it was during a dire situation so hearing the voice request it of him now gave him a bad feeling that Chete was about to flee Cista.

"You know, if you have an idea as to where to locate the cambion it would help a lot!" Vorbuk's tail twisted around in the air as he tried to convince it to give him more information. He had never met the man before so finding him in a kingdom loaded with cambions blending in among the crowd was not a simple task.

[ Invalid. ]

The voice's tone seemed to shift as if it was getting annoyed at his back to back questioning. Vorbuk lowered his head at the sudden wave of exhaustion he felt at the failed attempt to get anywhere with the information given to him. Not knowing what the man so much as looked like made it hard for him to locate him. If he waited until morning when everyone woke up to find Chete the cambion could have already fled by then. His night felt as though it was about to get long as he turned around and looked at all the passing people to his left and then to his right. Not a single person was looking at him due to them seeing waves of various demi humans and humans on a daily basis.

"I don't suppose you'll at least tell me what I am looking for?" Vorbuk asked once more without a hint of expectation from god's voice to actually pull through for him.

A soft white light began to ignite in the air in front of his face. No heat came from the light and yet it looked as though it would still burn whoever tried to touch it. The sight of the light caused Vorbuk's eyes to widen as it slowly began to float in a direction that felt almost random leaving him in a slight daze of confusion. Speeding up in mid air the light vanished into an alleyway causing him to snap back to reality and take chase after it. He was not certain what the light was but the one thing he could feel was that it was trying to lead him somewhere.

The night was cold and the breeze felt nice against his skin as it brushed through his fur as he ran. With all the experience he had been gaining from his night hunts his stamina had increased making it easier for him to run without worrying about exhaustion. The scent that wafted into his nose, however, felt unpleasant since he could not make out the species of any living things he passed due to there being so many people. For a wolf the crowd of smells was very unpleasing but it began to fade out and dim til he was starting to gain his sense of smell back. The crowds of people began to shrink as he followed the little white light as fast as he could.

Vanishing in thin air the light was gone as if it had never been there to begin with. Nothing was left in front of him as he stood there in front of a tall statue of the Cista king from old. It was a statue of the original king who had raised Cista from the ground with his own hands and built the kingdom from scratch. It was built as a memorial in his honor after the creation of the kingdom hundreds of years ago. Behind the statue stood a man who seemed to be among his twenties with black hair. The man's red eyes slowly connected with Vorbuk's as the man tilted his head back over his shoulder to inspect who had ran up on him.

Alarm bells felt like they were going on in Vorbuk's mind as neither of them wavered where they stood. Chete, the man standing in front of Vorbuk turned to walk away quickly as he pretended as though he had not seen the wolf. Following behind him Vorbuk quickly passed the man and jumped in front of him to interrupt his attempt to flee.

"Move." A single word alone from the man's voice caused Vorbuk to want to reconsider asking the man for help but he knew Daryl had said the man would be useful to them. He was simply a man who spent his entire life on the run from adventurers who saw him as a living target due to him being a cambion. Vorbuk had no way to communicate with this man and yet he was suppose to bring him back to Leo and the others.
