Mo Yang remained silent after Joon-won's nonchalant response, turning back to his phone, fingers tapping away. Joon-won, unfazed by Mo Yang's distraction, focused on the middle-aged man at the front of the classroom. After taking attendance, the teacher began his lecture.
The topic was a familiar one: the fundamentals of drama and the different types of actors. From Joon-won's memories, he knew this was well-trodden ground, but he listened intently. Unlike his classmates, he had never received formal training and had learned through trial and error. Now, he had the chance to build a solid foundation in acting.
The teacher reviewed common acting methods and how actors adapted to various roles. "We've covered these basics numerous times over the past year," the teacher said, scanning the room. "I'm sure you're tired of hearing the same things. You'll have the rest of the week free for practice. Next year will be different—more practical experience. You'll be assigned to drama clubs throughout the city. So, do your best on this week's exam." With that, he exited the classroom.
As the bell signaled lunchtime, Joon-won checked his phone and stood up. Mo Yang sprang to his feet, grabbing Joon-won's arm. "Let's grab a burger at the place opposite the west entrance. My treat!" Mo Yang said, already leading the way.
Joon-won sighed but followed, realizing there was no escaping Mo Yang's persistent enthusiasm. They walked towards the west entrance, Mo Yang chattering non-stop.
"Dude, the party after this week is going to be epic. Students from all over will be there. Total blast!"
"We should plan a huge summer trip with a few friends. What do you think?"
"I've got so many plans for summer. It's going to be lit!"
Joon-won grunted, barely paying attention to Mo Yang's rambling. He offered noncommittal hums as they reached the burger joint across the gate. The place was bustling with students, but they found a spot by the window.
"This place has the best burgers around. No wonder it's packed all day. Order whatever you want; it's on me." Mo Yang handed Joon-won the menu with a flourish.
Joon-won raised an eyebrow at Mo Yang's insistence but didn't argue. Mo Yang was always pushy and seemed to care a lot about appearances. After a quick glance at the menu, Joon-won picked a burger based on the most appetizing picture.
Handing the menu back, he couldn't help but ask, "Why did you even join the university? You're always partying and never seem to care about improving your craft."
Mo Yang looked up, a bit taken aback. "I don't know," he said with a sheepish smile. "I dreamed of coming here and now, well, it's fun going to all these parties. Don't you think?"
Joon-won shrugged again, feeling his patience wearing thin. Mo Yang's lack of ambition was frustrating. He decided then and there to distance himself. Spending time with Mo Yang felt like a slow drain on his resolve and intellect.
Their food arrived sooner than expected. Joon-won took a bite and nodded approvingly. The burger was decent but not something he'd want to eat every day as he didn't want the already bad body shape get worser.
As he enjoyed his meal, Mo Yang suddenly jumped up, his chair scraping the floor. "Damn, it's really him. I thought he'd skip classes today." Mo Yang fumbled for his wallet, tossing money on the table. "Sorry, man, I gotta go. Finish your food without me."
Confused, Joon-won watched Mo Yang rush out. He turned to see what had caused the commotion and spotted a figure entering the university gate surrounded by a group. It was easy to see why Mo Yang was in a hurry—the person was clearly someone of significance.
