And he only had two days left before the man who had turned his life inside out was due to leave.

Neither of them had mentioned it, neither even acknowledging that it was imminent. Charles wondered if Sebastian might just pretend it wasn’t there and stay forever.

He knew that wouldn’t happen.

He knew that Sebastian’s silence meant that he was going to go and ask for a commission.

Knew it.

He closed his eyes. Sebastian would be an incredible soldier. An incredible leader. Full of confidence, bravado, courage, and young enough to throw himself blindly into it and damn the consequences, and men would follow him. Gladly. He thought of the hundreds, nay thousands of men just like him that ended up ripped apart and left in a bloody heap on the battlefield for the crows and the thieves.

His stomach turned over as he wondered what he could offer that would make him want to stay. Could he be enough to make him want to stay?
