"Shiny Makuhita is so strong!"
"But is that speed something Makuhita should even have?"
"Maybe... that's what makes Shiny Makuhita special?"
The battle between Chris and Tyson had ended, but for the surrounding audience, the discussion was just beginning.
The speed Makuhita displayed in the battle, the uniqueness of a Shiny Pokémon, and Tyson's shocked, dazed expression after his defeat were all hot topics at dinner.
As expected, today's campus network would likely be buzzing with posts about Chris.
However, Chris left the battlefield immediately after the match. Riding his sonic bike, he sped off, avoiding classmates who wanted to snap photos with Flash Makuhita, and also dodging Amy in the process.
"Where are you? Why are you in such a rush?" Amy called.
"I've got something to do outside of school," Chris replied.
"Well, let me know when you're back. I haven't seen the big baby in days, and I miss it."
"OK~"
Chris responded casually, already riding past the school gate on his sonic bike.
Just as he approached the sea-crossing bridge, he spotted a familiar duo.
A Delibird stood on the bridge's railing with a Togepi perched on its head.
He had definitely seen this pair before.
"Togi togi!" Togepi waved cheerfully at Chris, greeting him like an old friend.
"I remember now." Chris recalled the potato and beef brisket rice he used to order in Redwood City, delivered by this very Delibird, who almost handed him a "Present" attack once.
"Why are you here?" Chris stopped his bike and pulled out a Pokéblock from his pocket, the kind Kirlia loved, offering it to Togepi.
"Togiiiii~" Togepi hugged the Pokéblock, eating happily. But Delibird, upon seeing Chris, burst into tears.
Clinging to Chris's arm, Delibird sobbed uncontrollably, sniffling and wailing for what felt like ages.
But... how am I supposed to understand Pokémon language? I don't have the power of aura or anything like that.
Chris sighed, silently offering two more Pokéblocks to Delibird.
Sniff.
Delibird immediately stopped crying when it smelled the delicious treat. It let go of Chris's arm and eagerly devoured the Pokéblocks.
It was clear both Pokémon had been hungry for a while.
"Did you two get lost?" Chris asked, though he found it hard to believe. After all, it would take over an hour to get from Redwood City to Dragon City, even by train.
Togepi buried its head sheepishly. I'm just a baby. The baby knows nothing.
Delibird blushed, scratching its head in embarrassment, but nodded.
"Lost while delivering food?"
Delibird nodded again, then rummaged through its small white bag, pulling out a glowing orb before hurriedly tucking it back in. After a moment, it handed Chris a box of beef brisket rice.
The meal was already cold.
"Okay, hang on a second. I'll help you contact your boss." Chris pulled out his phone and found the number for Bingbing Potato and Beef Brisket Rice, the place he often ordered from in Redwood City.
"Hello, is this Bingbing Potato and Beef Brisket Rice? Your delivery Pokémon got lost and ended up in Dragon City."
"Delivery? We don't have any Pokémon doing deliveries here. All our deliveries are handled by the service," the clerk on the other end replied, sounding confused.
"Huh? No delivery Pokémon?" Chris double-checked the store name and number. It was definitely the right one. "Delibird—the one that delivers with a Togepi."
"Oh, that Delibird! It's not ours. It's actually a wild Pokémon. Our boss noticed it hanging around and let it help with deliveries. A couple of days ago, it didn't return after an evening delivery, and our boss was getting worried."
"So it ended up in Dragon City, huh? Well, if you run into it, just tell it to come back when it can. Half a month's pay is still waiting for it," the clerk added.
After listening to the long explanation, Chris realized that these two Pokémon were wild. He'd always assumed they belonged to the shop's owner because they were delivering food.
Wild Pokémon, huh...
"What are your plans now?" Chris asked, turning to Delibird.
Delibird seemed confused. It had been doing fine delivering food in Redwood City, but after getting lost, it had somehow ended up here.
"Would you like to become my Pokémon?" Chris offered, pulling out two Poké Balls and placing them in front of Delibird and Togepi. He didn't intend for them to battle, but felt a connection with the duo. Keeping them close wouldn't be so bad, especially since Togepi's cuteness always lifted his spirits.
Delibird glanced up at Togepi perched on its head, then shook its head gently.
"Alright, how about I buy you two train tickets back to Redwood City?" Chris suggested, not wanting to push them.
Delibird thought about it, looking at Dragon City, which was much busier and more exciting than Redwood City, and shook its head again.
It seemed Delibird wanted to start a new life in Dragon City, though it hadn't quite figured out what to do next.
"Well, do you want me to help you find a job? You could do deliveries just like before, but this time in a smaller area so you won't get lost."
Chris remembered that the cafeteria's second-floor Braised Chicken Rice stand was hiring delivery Pokémon. In today's society, it wasn't unusual for Pokémon to take on jobs, and the delivery routes at the school were simple—plus, being surrounded by the sea, there wasn't much risk of getting lost.
Delibird thought for a long time, its tiny brain clearly working hard, before finally nodding in agreement.
To show its gratitude, Delibird reached into its white bag and pulled out a glowing, colorful ball of light.
"Put it back!" Chris said quickly.
Delibird stuffed it back, looking sheepish.
Don't worry, my Present doesn't explode every time, it seemed to be saying with its expression.
"Anyway, before I help you find a job, I need to run some errands. Want to come along? I'll treat you to lunch while we're at it."
