Chapter 26

* * * *

Dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, Jamie pockets both keycards and heads back down to Thad’s room. This time he knocks—and waits—until Thad hollers for him to come in. Jamie finds his friend sitting on the edge of the bed barefoot, wearing a pair of faded khakis rolled up at the ankle as he shrugs into a loose cotton shirt. When he pulls it over his head, he barely dislodges his still-damp hair. “Hey. Is anyone else back yet?”

“I didn’t see anyone.” Jamie flounces onto the bed beside Thad and rolls across the freshly-made covers to reach the remote on the night stand. Then he pushes himself up the mattress with his heels until he’s propped up on the pillows. He thumbs on the TV’s power button and starts to scroll through the channels. “You think Mark finished his essay yet?”

“It’s his fault we got in trouble in the first place,” Thad points out. “So I really don’t care.”
