Overlord: Reborn into a beautiful world

With the server shutdown of Yggdrasil, so did the polluted world where Suzuki Satoru lived in also come to an unexpected end. Given a second chance at life by a questionable source. The reincarnated salaryman began to experience life for the very first time. Unaware of the mysteries and schemes lurking beneath the surface of this new world. "For All things have their own price by trial. I you wish to eat, you must pursue your sustenance." This story is a guilt pleasure of mine.

[Time: Afternoon]

[Location: Fort- Academia Magnus north gate.]

[Ainzack PoV]

The trip to Fort- Academia Magnus had been less eventful with the twins around than I anticipated. Most of the time, the two were either staring at me like a museum exhibit or were gazing out the window looking for things that caught their interest. I had to strike up a conversation every time before the atmosphere in the carriage became too awkward or too suffocating. I could understand to a lesser extent how father felt when he had to sit through those meetings with the other nobles that take days to end.

On the other hand, the journey was also less eventful than I predicted. There was a group of 40ish bandits blocking the road. Keyword being "was". I expected a fight to break out any minute. Then they simply scattered into the nearby woods leaving their weapons behind as a sign of surrender, after seeing a knight of the Grand guard order sitting beside the carriage driver. Very anti-climactic. At least they knew when to retreat and no blood was spilled. To this point, I had killed dozens of goblins and wild animals. I Hadn't killed a human till this point, but come to think about it, even if it will probably come to it one day, it would be something that I don't think I would get used to. Part of the remnants that is my previous self from the old world is rather glad about not needing to spill the blood of another human being. Even if the memories of my past were grim and filled with sorrow, it is something I shouldn't forget about. Ironic, it is those memories that remind me of how wonderful the life I have now truly is.

[Line Break/third person PoV]

Fort- Academia Magnus is a city of architectural wonder. The city is built within two layers of massive stone wall inlayed by layers upon layers of defensive enchantments. Several towers were built on the insides of the outer walls and the inner walls were more impressive, they reminded Ainzack of the castle walls of Camelot back from Yggdrasil. one can say that Fort academia Magnus is built inside of a fortress. There are two gates that lead into the city, one on the south side of the fort leading to the port city Marna where trade between the island nation Jiro often occurs. Jiro is an independent nation ruled over by three shogun houses. The nation reminded Ainzack of Japan during the feudal era.

[Ainzack PoV]

The second gate is on the north/west side of the fort facing the capital of Kaenrild. It is also the gate where me and my group of escorts arrived, and it looks like our arrival has already been expected. In front of the twelve-story tall gate, two squads of knights are already waiting for our arrival. In the front of the group stood two figures, one is an elven male apparently in his thirties, clad in pine-green scholar robes with a cerulean-blue scarf draped over his right shoulder like a cape. The person to his left seems to be a Beast-kin woman of the horn-folk variety, she had long messy moss-green hair hanging loose down to her upper waist and bright ginger-colored eyes. Her attire is similar to that of the elf's, but navy-blue in color instead of green, and without the scarf. In appearance, she looked to be a few years older than the elven man.

Me and Olragern went to greet them as decorum requests. The elf stepped forward.

"Greetings, heir of Ovirick. I am headmaster of Academia Magnus, Richard Ouculawnce." The headmaster introduced himself. His voice was smooth as butter. He would make a good voice actor if it was a profession in this world. He then gestured to the Horn-folk woman to his left. "This is professor Durink-Aelice, she is my secretary and professor in fields of the arcane and druid-wisdom."

"Greetings." The beast-kin in question bowed politely. Then the headmaster continued.

"It's been some time since the Academy had the pleasure of welcoming a member of house Ovirick. I do hope your time here will be pleasant."

The headmaster had a salesman smile plastered on his face. From what Ainzack could guess, he was probably irritated to be out here greeting a single student. Ainzack did have to give him credit for the perfect act, was it not for him seeing the same smile in the mirror in his previous life, Ainzack could have been fooled by the headmaster's acting skills. So, to show courtesy, the former salesman returned the gesture. "And I am truly grateful for the headmaster to greet me in person, I am sorry if my arrival had kept you from your duties." Ainzack gave the best Salesman bow he can muster.

The reply made the elven headmaster lift a brow. But it quickly became a genuine smile. "And so humble, this year will be quite a pleasant year with a good example student such as young lord attending." It seems, the headmaster is either trying to butter up to me or he genuinely think's so.

"Miss Durink-Aelice will show you around and get you settled. Orientation day will be three days from today, feel free to explore the city if it suits young heir's fancy. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. And before I forgot, Welcome to Fort- Academia Magnus." Richard finished his speech like a professional actor, it is as if he had been practicing his speeches in front of a mirror on a daily basis. On the side lines, I could faintly pick up the twitching of miss Durink-Aelice's eyebrow. I know that expression, it is often seen when a boss lets his secretary deal with his responsibilities instead of doing it themselves. The headmaster seems to be the sort of person that likes to stand in the spotlight and gives praises but will weasel himself out of any kind of extra work if it is possible. That is my first impression of the man. Doesn't matter where you go, some things never change.

[time skip: Noon next day]

Fort academia Magnus is divided into six districts. The academy district is a district made from towering constructs connected to one another with bridges in between the individual buildings, and is in the center of the city. The towers overlook the entire city. The military district is located between the two layers of walls surrounding the city. To the south of the academy is the civilian district comprised of the local guilds, restaurants, trading hubs and taverns. On the east is the dormitory for both teachers and students, while the west area is a research institution where mages of high ranks conduct experiments in the name of knowledge. On the northern part of Academia Magnus is where a roman style Colosseum is build for some reason. It has a transparent dome covering the upper part of the colosseum like a roof. It is in the northern district. Ainzack theorized that it is used to conduct mock battles or hold tournaments to provide entertainment.

In Academia Magnus, Ainzack currently lives in the dormitory residential area inside an apartment complex close to the Academy itself. Unlike the small apartment back in the old world, this one is almost ten times larger. Back in the old world this would have been a luxury only affordable by high-ranking officials like Touchme-san. Yet he didn't live alone in this overly spacious apartment. His two "bodyguards" Nilzyl- and Iyzlin Sakahida have moved into the bedrooms next to his own. Ainzack had the misfortune this morning to be flashed by one of them in their plain-white-laced swimsuit-like undergarments. Peros would have killed to be in his place to have two cute twins living with him under one roof. But the heir of Ovirick had to admit that the twins didn't look bad. Surely in a few years they will look stunningly beautiful.

Shaking those thoughts out of his head, Ainzack proceeded to explore Fort academia Magnus. At the moment Ainzack is wandering around the civilian district in something more casual. Instead of his usual clothes, his attire is currently a plain black long-sleeved shirt with a short leather cape worn by hunters draped over his shoulders. Hunter-pants down to his ankles and a pair of inked leather boots. Ainzack had a particular fondness for his current outfit. Most of his attire was made from the leather of his prey he hunted down during his time in the forests in the Ovirick territory. In quality they might be lower in comparison to his more formal attires, but these hold more of a sentimental value to the young Ovirick. These simple pieces of gambesons reminded him of his early days in Yggdrasil, where he and his friends hunted down various monsters for materials to craft weapons and armor.

In the corner of Ainzack's periphery vision, Ainzack could see two pairs of pink eyes taking not so hidden glances at him. At this point Ainz had mastered {pulse location} without needing a catalyst to cast it. Sending faint pulses of mana slowly into his surroundings, he can pinpoint even the exact location of every insect in a 10-meter radius. Anything outside his ten-meter radar will get blurrier the longer the distance. Despite having two stalkers following his every move. Ainzack decided it would be better to have them around. Even in a city like F.A.M., one of the most secure cities in the kingdom, it would never hurt to have allies right in the next corner.

Wandering through the market, Ainzack could see many different sorts of food stalls lined up in neat rows across the spacious plaza. Stopping at one of the stalls that sells spices, he purchased some of the stronger flavored seasonings for instant usage.

After his purchase, he then turned down a few streets in the general direction of the institution for national arcane research in the north/west side of the civilian district. Yesterday Ainzack had asked professor Durink-Aelice if the city of Fort Academia Magnus have any shops that sell magical trinkets like arcane instruments or magical scrolls. Turns out spell scrolls exist in this world. They are parchments that usually have a spell sealed inside them. By unlocking the sealing-formula on the parchment, the sealed spell will be cast. Ainzack wants to buy something that can act as extra safety precautions in case some unexpected threat emerges.

Making another turn, Ainzack was in front of a large gate built into a wall with a smaller one next to it. This is the entrance to the street where the arcane shops are located. the trafficking of any magical artifacts is under strict surveillance in Kaenrild. Throughout the history of Kaenrild, there have been a few instances where people used magical artifacts and arcane instruments to arm criminal forces and cause havoc. In order to oversee the market of magic items of all sorts, the kingdom decided to only allow officials and individuals with a proper license to have access to the market of magic items. These licenses are ranked according to the position of said person. In correspond to both the lethality and number of items said person can own.

As the heir of one of the three duke-houses of the kingdom, Ainzack naturally has a mid-ranking license to purchase magical items. Going through the smaller door next to the large slab of a door, Ainzack was met with a room with a counter to the right and another door facing parallel to the one Ainz just entered. Behind the counter stood a brown-haired man in his 40th, next to him on both sides each stood a guard. Ainzack showed the man his license and signed his name and in a book, registering that he had been visiting the arcane market for today. The brown-haired man then pressed a button under the counter and the entrance to the arcane market opened.

[line break: Brunette man PoV]

Looking at the back of the boy in hunting gear, I didn't really care. After all, it's just another young noble that had taken a fancy in a few trinkets. At least the lass knows how to be discreet about things. Even in a save city such as Fort academia Magnus, one can never know went one of those dammed Darakmian spies got lucky enough to sneak into the city. In the last ten years three houses lost an heir or a replacement due to those Darakmian dogs getting enough information on them to plan the assassination. The last one was five years ago when the spy disguised as a merchant from Jiro snuck into the city. Bastard almost caused a diplomatic incident. The soon as the "hunter boy" left for the street, the other door opened. In came a pair of twins. Probably stalkers of that noble son, he does have the looks of a heartbreaker. That thought went out the window faster than in a blink when the two showed me their license. At this moment, I didn't know if I should have pitied the lad or be relieved for the lad. Having not one but two Grand guards tailing him on one side he is safe from most assassins coming after his life. On the other hand, any lad with two beauties like these would probably get kill by his classmates out of jealousy…...

…To be continued

A/N : took me a long time to finish this chapter. I ran into some problems regarding world building, and I had to improvise. Starting from the next chapter I will refer to Ainzack simple as Ainz due to my autocorrection keeps messing with the name. depending on how well this story is doing.

Note: this new world is not the same new world as in cannon.

Clarify on the different races.

There are beast-kin. Who are humans with a set of animal features such as ears, tails and hair-color matching the animal they represent.

Insectoids belong to the same category as beast-kins. They have feelers, wings and exo-skeletons covering parts of their skins as extra armor. Reference: terra-formars, but less buff and more aesthetically appealing.
