Chapter 48

Apparently, none of those things had been in the life plan of Vincent Wallace the third. His father, Vincent Wallace Jr. was a District Attorney and Vee planned to follow in his footsteps. He’d had enough ambitions for the both of us, and probably for my brother and his wife, too. I’d never minded his drive or his long hours at the office, but it wasn’t something I wanted for myself. He’d asked me from time to time if I didn’t have hopes and dreams to become more than just a teacher. Something better. I’d told him I lived my dream, and it was the truth.

But it hadn’t been enough for him; he’d made that abundantly clear that fateful Saturday almost two years ago.

I can’t spend the rest of my life with someone without ambitions.

His words had been a crack with a drumstick so hard it had ripped through the membrane of the drum, and not even duct tape had managed to repair it permanently.
