Chapter 19: Return to Tallian City
Alan's days following the confrontation at the Red Velvet Brothel had been remarkably uneventful. After obtaining the information he needed and eliminating those who stood in his way, he had taken some time to recuperate and refocus. Now, he was ready to continue his journey.
The merchant group he had agreed to escort back to Tallian City had been eager to leave
Kassir City as soon as possible. The trip was long but fortunately devoid of any incidents. Alan remained vigilant throughout, but it seemed that the bandits and assassins were taking a break.
As the gates of Tallian City came into view, Alan felt a sense of relief. The towering walls and bustling streets were a welcome sight after the quiet, tense journey. He bid farewell to the merchant group, who thanked him profusely for his protection. With his duties fulfilled, Alan made his way directly to the Adventurers Guild to collect his reward.
The guild was as lively as ever, with adventurers of all ranks mingling, boasting about their latest exploits, or looking over the job board for their next mission. Alan stepped through the heavy wooden doors and was immediately met with the familiar scent of leather and steel.
At the reception desk, Sebastian was busy sorting through a stack of papers. The guild master looked up as Alan approached, a warm smile spreading across his face.
"Alan! Good to see you back in one piece," Sebastian greeted him, setting aside the papers.
"How was the journey?"
"Uneventful, thankfully," Alan replied, pulling the signed mission form from his pack and handing it over. "Here's the documentation from the merchant leader confirming the successful escort."
Sebastian took the form and gave it a quick once-over before nodding in satisfaction.
"Excellent work, as always. Let me just process this and get your payment."
As Sebastian worked, Alan glanced around the guild hall. The noise and energy of the place were comforting in their own way. Adventurers shared stories, laughed, and occasionally sparred in friendly bouts. It was a stark contrast to the silent, deadly encounter with the assassins in Kassir City.
"So, any interesting news while I was gone?" Alan asked, trying to keep the conversation light.
Sebastian looked up with a grin. "Well, nothing quite as dramatic as what you seem to attract, but Felix and Shavin have taken on a pretty tough mission up north. Alameda has been around, helping out with some local tasks. Speaking of which, here comes Alameda now."
Alan turned to see Alameda approaching, her bright smile lighting up the room. "Alan! You're back!" she exclaimed, giving him a friendly hug. "How was Kassir City?"
"It had its moments," Alan replied with a chuckle. "I heard Felix and Shavin are off on another mission."
"Yeah, they couldn't resist the call of adventure," Alameda said with a laugh. "How about you? What's next on your agenda?"
"I'm not sure yet. I think I'll take a day or two to rest and then see what jobs are available," Alan answered, his eyes scanning the job board out of habit.
"Well, don't be a stranger. We should team up again sometime," Alameda suggested.
"Anyway, I've got to run, but we'll catch up later."
"Sounds good," Alan agreed, watching her leave before turning back to Sebastian, who handed him a pouch of coins.
"Here's your reward," Sebastian said. "And remember, if you complete a few more missions, you'll be eligible for the next rank. Keep up the good work, Alan."
"Thanks, Sebastian," Alan said, taking the pouch and securing it in his pack. "I'll see you around."
With his business at the guild concluded, Alan headed towards the Sunny Day Inn, eager for some rest and a good meal. The streets of Tallian City were busy with the late afternoon rush, vendors shouting their wares and children running through the alleys. Alan walked with a purposeful stride, feeling more at ease with every step.
The Sunny Day Inn was as inviting as ever, its sign swaying gently in the breeze. He pushed open the door and was greeted by the warm, comforting smell of home-cooked food. Melina, the innkeeper, was behind the counter, her face lighting up when she saw him.
"Alan! Welcome back!" Melina exclaimed. "It's good to see you. How was your journey?"
"Long and uneventful," Alan replied with a smile. "It's good to be back. Could I get some food, please?"
"Of course! Have a seat, and I'll bring something right out," Melina said, bustling off to the kitchen.
Alan chose a table near the fireplace, its warm glow adding to the cozy atmosphere of the inn. He leaned back in his chair, letting out a contented sigh. It was good to be home.
Melina soon returned with a plate of steaming stew, freshly baked bread, and a mug of ale.
"Here you go, Alan. Eat up," she said, placing the food in front of him.
"Thank you, Melina," Alan said, digging in. The stew was delicious, rich with chunks of tender meat and vegetables. The bread was warm and crusty, perfect for sopping up the savory broth.
Melina sat down across from him, a curious look in her eyes. "So, what have you been up to? You always seem to have the most interesting adventures."
Alan laughed, taking a sip of his ale. "Well, this time it was more about protecting a merchant group. But there was a bit of excitement in Kassir City."
"Oh? Do tell," Melina prompted, leaning forward.
Alan recounted his journey to Kassir City, the uneventful trip back, and his brief encounter with Alameda at the guild. He left out the more dangerous and grisly details, preferring to keep the conversation light.
"It sounds like you've been busy," Melina said when he finished. "You're always welcome here, Alan. You know that."
"I appreciate it, Melina," Alan replied, finishing his meal. "It's good to have a place to come back to."
Melina smiled warmly. "Well, you get some rest. If you need anything, just let me know."
"I will," Alan said, standing up. "Thanks again for the food. It was delicious."
"Anytime, Alan," Melina said, watching him as he headed towards his room.
Alan entered his room, feeling the familiar comfort of the Sunny Day Inn. He removed his armor and sword, placing them carefully in the corner. As he lay down on the bed, he reflected on the past few days. There was still much to uncover, and his journey was far from over, but for now, he was content to rest and regain his strength.
The next day, Alan woke up feeling refreshed and ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. He knew that his journey would take him to new and dangerous places, but with each step, he grew stronger and more determined. His quest for answers was just beginning, and he would stop at nothing to uncover the truth and protect those he cared about.
For now, though, he would enjoy the peace and comfort of Tallian City, knowing that his next adventure was just around the corner.
