“How do you know which way we’re going?” Kevin asked.
“I use the moon,” she answered.
Around midnight they reached a small town. Not a person or car stirred, but Ash directed them to hang back for a few minutes just in case. When no signs of life appeared, they stepped out of the trees and onto a side road. The rumbling of the cooler wheels sounded eerie in the quiet streets, so Ash carried it. By looking at signs and landmarks she figured out where they were.
They were out of the town by one A.M. with no problems, trudged through a soybean field, and took a break in a small cluster of trees where Ash got a snack for everyone out of her bag. “If we walk through fields instead of trees I bet we’ll be able to move faster in the dark; we just have to make sure we find a good place to rest when the sun comes up.”
“Are you all right, Kevin?” Dayna asked. “You’ve been really quiet.”
“I’m okay,” he said, yawning.
